General Being a better Roleplayer?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a webpage or blog on "How to be a better Roleplayer", specifically for Science Fiction?

Or how about your Tips and Tricks?

I like to brainstorm the character's concept before I do anything. At one time I would make a character then try and build a concept around what I built (Hero) or rolled (Traveller). Although there were some good characters from that time, the better and more memorable characters came from having the concept first.

The current (Mongoose) campaign that I am playing in, my character is a former police detective inspired partly by Kevin Costner in Highwaymen and Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. As it was my first time with Mongoose's character generation, I was surprised at how well the the concept I had and the system meshed together.

I would say, you have at least a little knowledge and background in what your character does. While you can play a character that is completely out of your depth of education, knowledge, and experience, it's much harder than if you have at least some basic idea what the skills and background of the character should be like.

The second thing I would offer is that you should show some empathy towards how that character would act. For example, you should think hard about say a character that is of high social standing, and has a background of being an outstanding citizen and say military officer willingly doing some overt, seriously, criminal act. Or, the reverse. You should have some idea what your character's background is and how that would make them act.

This question goes triple for refs who have to act out the NPCs.

I like the card deck behavior and motivation deck from the original Twilight 2000/2300 games to help the ref. The player crafting a character may already have an idea of what they are after, the questions should be answered even without the card system.

One big todo is treat all characters as believing they are the heroes of their own story, even if they are objectively villains.

Another trick of the trade is to add signature lines/tics/peccadillos/modus operandi. Always using grav vehicle metaphors, space related swear words, being afraid of cats, getting into brawls on Union Day, etc. makes them distinct and memorable.
