Best Movie/Computer Game Ships to Convert to CT/HG?

Ran Targas

This probably should be in the Survey section but so be it; go ahead and list the ships you'd like to see stat'ed and deckplan'ed for CT/HG.

I've been playing BSG Online (http://us.battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com) too much lately and I like some of the Human escorts and line ships (although I play a Cylon); I think they'd fit in nicely in the TU. Any others?

The obvious ones would be Serenity and Millenium (?) Falcon. How about the agro dome ship from silent running? also used in both versions of BSG.

I agree but the agro ships seem a bit pedestrian; they're basically 10kT modular freighters with greenhouse pods instead of cargo pods. I'm not sure they would ever need more than M1/J1 since really all they need to do is stabilize themselves in orbit of a star and photosythesize to beat the band.

I've done a 200dT version of the base YT-1300 freighter but it's really tough to squeeze in much better than M4/J4 drives which don't, IMHO, even approximate the performance of the Millenium Falcon. But when I do, I can't keep the same deck plan as in SW canon; just not enough room for fuel. My assumption from the movies is she can keep up with even cobbled together Rebel fighters (ROTJ), which means better than 4G manuevering. And her jump drives must be top rate to have "made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs".

That did always make me laugh, using a unit of distance measurement as a measurement of time. With all of their money, with all of their resources poor Hollywood just does not have time to do things right. It really is a shame.

;)

Heathens! This confusion about the Kessel Run has already been handwaved...I mean explained to the unwashed masses!
<snark off>

I always get a kick out of authors trying to explain away stuff fans call them on.

Star Wars ships are the right size and shape for Traveller, even if they don't "fit" well (hyperdrives on fighters, etc.) with the basic Traveller assumptions all the time.

Some of the obvious ships (Serenity, and what the **** is an Aluminum Falcon?) have already been mentioned.

The Normandy (both versions) from Mass Effect seems like a shoe-in - small enough to be useful to a player group, but large enough to be dangerous. (The first one seems about Patrol Cruiser sized, the second one is closer to a frigate)

(In fact, the wonderful "Iridium Lion" in Dilettante looks suspiciously like the Normandy to me - will we ever see the "Wander" class deep scout that this ship is derived from in a real publication I wonder?)

I'd suggest the Sun Dog :), but it's barely a modular cutter.

Many other scifi ships are either little better than boats or are so large that they are more setting than vehicle.

The main problem with the ME Normandys (SR1 and SR2), comes back to the main problem of backfitting TV starships into Trav.

Trav has the "takes a week and crap loads of fuel" drive, while TV/CG ships usually have a 'plot powered, shoebox sized, go anywhere instantly' engine. Trying to make a fast, stealthy & long range ship would be very difficult once you knock off a large chunk of room for jump fuel and a massive M drive.

But back to other ships - prehaps the Vesuvius (heavy carrier) and Intrepid (obsolete destroyer with a carrier deck retrofitted) from the Wing Commander universe. I tried to design the Dragon heavy fighter in Trav years ago, but it never quite worked (esp the cloak system and fission cannons).

I'm curios about BSG online since I have the cd rom to play at home. Is Sierra ,who makes the cd rom the same company running the online game and does it cost anything to play?

As for movie /t.v. ships go I've found the Galactica to be a nice ship for my Rule of man campaign. The Millenium Falcon can be slipped in anywhere( Ive occassionaly used it for a pirate ship) Oh and one more thing about the Galactica.....It bears a slight resemblance to the Wind class strike carrier on page 35 of supplement 9

the BSG-OL browser interface is free to play and runs fine on mac .... required a plug in called unity player. You can even (slowly) earn cubits for the really good stuff.

As Aramis stated, the developer is Bigpoint, it's browser based, and it's free. Check the link in my first post.

And Ran, my wife would like to have some unpleasant words with you for bringing it to my attention.....

BTW: the costs for new ships are all in cubits; I've earned about 500 cubits a day playing 3 hours or so each... and access to new ships run many thousand cubits.

Their business model involves selling cubits to players. Cubits can be converted to just about anything in-game you might need... and are almost frustratingly slow to earn.

And I keep getting my butt kicked by toasters...

The Valkyrie from Titan AE would make a good Traveller Ship , maybe the Original Jupiter 2 from Lost In Space though you'd have to make it bigger to shoehorn the drives in. The Ebon Hawk from Kotor 1 and 2 would be a good choice as well though same problems as with the Aluminum Pelican :)
The Venture Star and the X-33 would also make good conversion subjects for Traveller .

You'll probably find it's the opposite: many of designs in Supp 9 are based off TV & movies. For example, there's at least 3 that look like Star Destroyers: the Midu Agasham, the Gionetti, & the Kokirrak...

Paul Jaquays commented in an email to me he was surprised no-one had come up with better ships than the ones he painted at his kitchen table...

LOL! I'm harboring a slight addiction myself ... It's just too bad you play for the meatbags, I would enjoy flying on your wing.

BTW, the best way to earn cubits is the assignments given onboard the Galactica (in your case) or Basestar in the case of the Cylons; you have to go in the lounge and talk to Starbuck or Apollo. These assignments involve fleet defense, mining, recon, etc. These can net you several hundred credits each and if you can pop enough Cylon players, you will get merits too that can be applied to ship improvements and buying nukes.

As for Titan AE, the Valkyrie is a sweet ride; what do you think the tonnage is? 200dT? 400dT?

I started playing BSG online too. Very nice, though I wish I could fly with my joystick :) I'm a Cylon too, rather interesting playing a toaster. The urge to holler " Die Human Scum !" happens quite often :)

As for the Valkyrie's size , I was watching the movie again and the Phoenix looks to be about 100t maybe 150t , so I would think Valkyrie comes out at somewhere between 400t and 600t. She looks a bit bigger than a Gazelle class CE. When Cale comes in through the belly hatch on the Valkyrie , the bay looks to be about 20t to 30t.

I'm basing the estimates on the Bridge blisters on both ships and the sizes of the figures inside .

It does have a nice nod to us oBSG fans, in that my character is in an oBSG uniform...

Yeah, I just registered and flew My first tutorial mission it sure would be nice if they told me how to control my frackin' viper!
