Hello all,

While running the Zhodani Escort from Alien Module 4 pages 40-41 through both Book 2 1977 and Book 2 1981 the Design and Construction sequence has four sub-topics.

The first topic is Naval Architecture which indicates that a architect charges a 1% fee for completing deck plans in four weeks or 1.5% fee when completing them 2 weeks.

The next topic is Standard Designs which says that a complete set of standard design plans for Cr100.

In Book 2 the standard hulls are 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 tons.

If I created a standard 600 ton hull would the architect's fee apply, or just the Cr100 for the standard set of design plans, or would they both apply?

The naval architect fees would apply if you customized that 600 ton hull. The standard ship design plans are for the ships already designed for the game.

Let's be a little more specific about the proposed ship and, for the sake of discussion, say it is a Subsidized merchant stretched from 400 dTons to 600 dTons and upgraded to Jump 2. Let's set the base cost at MCr 100 (just to keep the math simple)

The Architect's fee (MCr 1) applies to the First set of plans ... used to build the prototype ... cost of prototype = MCr 101.

The initial order for the shipyard was for 5 identical ships ... the second through fifth ships are 'standard designs' produced at a 10% discount ... cost of ships 2 thru 5 = MCr 90 (the yard already has the architects plans) ... Note that the architect may be entitled to Cr 100 for each of ships 2 thru 5, but those details are based on the contract and, let's be realistic, Cr 100 is lost in the decimal points of a MCr ship.

Richy Rich sees one of the ships and loves the design, so he contacts the Architect and buys a set of plans for Cr 100 and takes them to his local shipyard in the next sector ... the shipyard begins an order for 100 ships with the first ship costing MCr 100 [actually, MCr 100.000100 to be exact], and each additional ship costing MCr 90 ... actually, probably MCr 90.000100 but again, the Cr 100 fee is lost in the decimal points.

Fred the Pilot buys a surplus version of the ship second hand (let's say salvaged after a pirate attack and written off as a loss by the insurance company) ... he wants a set of plans to make refitting and repairing the ship easier, so he buys a set from the architect for Cr 100.

With the growing popularity of the design, the original shipyard sells its 1000th ship ... even if we include the Cr 100 per ship and divide the architect fee among all the ships, then the cost of ship number 1000 is MCr 90.001100.

So what is important looking at the big picture:
... building a one of a kind ship = no discount, pay architect's fee
... building a run of ships = 10% discount, fees lost in decimal points

Evening PST timerover51,

Thank you very much for the reply.

My first thought was as you describe that with custom hulls the architect's fee applies. Unfortunately, when I was cleaning up the spreadsheet I confused myself.

Again thank you for the help.
