I maintain that family-run ships are a viable option, for much the same reason mid-west families had lots of kids; free labor. Granted, there's a learning curve, but even there as I've already stated, kids can help a little.
Hell, I wasn't four years old before I was helping my dad and his friends at a Garage. I couldn't do much, but I k new which tools were which and I'd spend hours running about bringing them whatever they needed.
