My longest-running CT campaign started with a group of brand-new players (ahh, fresh meat...) and an almost-as-new referee ("Wuttsa saving throw, and wherezits chart?").
Since I had just mustered out of the military - so I had direct experience in starting over - I put all the characters into the following opening scenario:
"You people have all mustered out of your respective services at the same time and location; a planet called Deldswold. It's conditions and business opportunities are reminiscent of Old Earth's mid-19th century California Gold Rush, but with LAW-4 and TEC-9. You've collected your pay vouchers at the downport's Imperial Service Outprocessing Facilty, the Merchant Marine Guild Hall, the IISS Re-Assignment Center, and the Deldswold System Penitentiary and Parole Board. (Amazing what those downports can hold, isn't it?) There is one bus left to make the 20-kilometer trip from the downport into Doj, the planetary capital. One of the people waiting for the bus addresses the crowd of about 20 beings.
"I gotta friend in town with a Far Trader, a cargo to run, and no crew to run it..."
This group of five players ran for a little over a year and a half before breaking up for college, marriage, legal entanglements, and other issues.
