Capital of Domain of Sol in 445

Yes, in a Traveller way, maybe Iridium Throne and Revolver etc.; though it all seems a bit too star wars-ish as it is.
Star Wars was an influence on Traveller, but I don't quite see what a starship and crown has to do with Star Wars. If it reminds me of anything, it's the emblem of Asimov's Galactic Empire, which IIRC was a starship and blaster; starship and something, anyway.

I would bet that Valerian and Laureline the french comic which did influence Star Wars had a big influence on Traveller too.
It's possible, but it would require one of the GDW crowd to be a fan of French comics. Personally I'm fairly jaded, if that's the word I want, with automatic assumtions about similarity indicating influence. There are some things featured in Valerian and Laureline that have similarities to things featured in Star Wars, but then again, there are a LOT of things in V&L that do not have counterparts in Star Wars. As well as things that are common SF tropes.

As for V&L being an influence on Traveller, just what featureas are you thinking of?

I have only seen the animated version its on Hulu for those who want to see it. I see the Galtic Empire and a bit of Imperuim. The Droyne and the trading Shingouz are pretty similar in appearance. Though I have admit V&L is much more pulpy/space opera than most Traveller games it still has some great adventures. Imagine the party kidnapped and forced to star in a reality tv show like V&L were.

The only thing I can produce that suggests that the Domain of Sol was not name thus in 76 is the argument that it's an unlikely thing to call a domain that consisted of two sectors (neither of which were Sol sector) that partly belonged to the Imperium and two sectors (one of which was Sol sector) that did not belong to the Imperium.

What in exactly the same manner as the Gateway Domain?

Best regards,

Ewan

The original boxed set of LBB's was typeset and sent off to the printeers, then Marc & Loren went off to the premiere of Star Wars. Afterwards, Marc said "Traveller IS Star Wars!"

I guess this means that the first ruleset was NOT influenced by SW, but when you look at subsequent releases you can see the influence.

For example, the change from a Bk2 "small ship universe" to a Bk5 "big ship universe" obviously post-dates SW. A number of Paul Jaquays' ship drawings in Supp9 are obvious homages to SW (the Gionetti, Kokkirak, and Tigress).

On the other hand, fortunately, the ironmongery in Bk4 does not include any hint of a "laser sword", and even has its own unique weapons such as the gauss rifle, VRF gauss gun, and the P/FGMPs.

So it's not all bad. ;) ;) ;P

While I can't provide citations, I somewhere somehow got the impression that the purpose of establishing the Domains was to manage the integration of those worlds into the Imperium, including bringing in those worlds that were not already members. On that assumption, I don't see it as unreasonable to name the domain after its intended capital world/system, or the world/system that has the greatest symbolic significance in some way. Perhaps that's how the various domains got their names, including Gateway and Sol?

IMO the name of the intended capital system in the Domain of <Sol> would not have been Sol. It's not even the name of the system you're thinking of; that one is named Terra (Sol is just the name of the sun in that system, but Imperial custom is to name systems after the mainworld). But why would Artemsus plan on making Terra the capital of the domain at a time when he had no idea about conditions there? Just to annoy his dukes in Diaspora and Old Expanses? The proper archduke of that domain at the time would have been the sector duke of Diaspora or or Old Expanses.

As for Gateway, I've thought it over and come up with a possible explanation: The whole region was known as Gateway back in the 1st Century -- Ley, Gateway, Emaragamigu, Glimmerdrift Reaches, Crucis Margin, and Galiin. The Domain was named for that and the sector was likewise name for it.
