Character Creation Question

OK silly question time.

Rolling up a character. I start him off as a Marine. After three fairly successful terms, (Gets a commission and a promotion, so is now a Captain.) fails to reenlist. Musters out of the Marines. Not quite ready to start adventuring, decides to become a Mercenary. Meets the prerequisites and finds employment. Obviously can't take any more levels as a Marine, but does the character start over as a Private, or does the commission/rank carry over? Or, as in LBB4, start off as an NCO (Junior Officers have to be a minimum of an NCO, Field Grade Officers, minimum Junior Officer, General Officers, minimum Field Grade Officers.)?

It seems silly to go all the way back to Private, but it doesn't seem logical that the rank would be carried over either. It allows for extraenous XP to be awarded as well. (Get XP for getting commissioned twice for example.)

I think the answer to this may be found in the player's guide playtest material.
IIRC you drop a rank if you transfer to a different service.
For changing to a merc I would use the guidelines in LBB4.

I looked in the Player's Guide Playtest file and didn't see anything about it there. I guess I'll go back and look again. The problem with the LBB4 Guidelines is it wasn't designed to let you continue Prior History. (though it did give equivalent of experience (a skill) in basic character generation for commission.)

Check the "Homebrew Rules" thread. I have adopted a lot of from these boards; a character in the situation described above would keep their commission but lose one rank.

I'd say you commission newly, since it is not a service, but a core class.
Depends on Referee though. I would make you not commision again, since mercaneries can't teach you new stff here.
