I noticed on the character generation checklist that if you succeed in advancement on step 8b and are continuing in the career it says to go to step 5. You only go to step 9 if you are leaving the career.

Does this mean that if you are advanced you do not age?

I changed 8b to always go to step 9. Does this sound right?

8d talks about rolling for commission instead of advancement. Does that imply you do not get a skill when you advance since that is in back up there in step 8b? Personally I think it means you can roll for Advancement or commission in step 8a but then the wording in step 8b shouldn't be "increase" your rank....

I saw that too. i think it was an oversight. The 4 year terms has always been part of Traveller. Basically you age 4 years every cycle.

I ruled that the player could roll for either commission or advancement, and as Officer rank 1 is higher than Enlisted rank one it counted as an advancement for skill purposes.
