Does anyone recall which issues of either JTAS, Journal or Challenge child characters and pre-college chargen were in?

I've tried looking online, but only got a Mongoose thread discussing the topic.

Challenge #26 Has an article Military Academy: A Traveller Variant by Marcus L. Rowland.

It is a good natured look at the trials and tribulations of Cadets in a 4 year Military academy with a full roleplaying set of rules which cover much of a cadet's life. Like much of Traveller, it can be run as a separate game or as a part of a group experience during character generation.

Cadets allocate their time between lessons, extra-curricular activity and off base life. For conflicts, their are the Duel rules.

I tried it with a few players years ago and had a bunch of fun which lead to characters with interesting and extensive backgrounds. Some of these PCs still live on in my T5 Universe.

It is also suitable for referees who enjoy solo activity to build NPCs with a grudge.

The way I handle children is like this...

SOC for all children is 2D or that of the parent.

INFANTS

EDU is 0.

INT is 1.

STR, DEX, END are all 1.

CHILDREN

EDU is a roll of 1D

INT is a roll of 1D

STR, DEX, END are all a roll of 1D.

ADULT

At age 18, roll 1D and add to the numbers above previously established.

Or, 2D for all stats (pre career), of course.

If a child is an infant or very young, then use physicals at 1. SOC

Surprisingly, growing up as a moisture farmer on some remote desert planet still makes possible some nifty smallcraft skillz.

And if it wasn't an empty boast, astronavigation and pilot (starship).

Don't forget his Dad Had Robotics and Grav Vehicle...... :)

If I were to run a campaign with kids as characters, I'd have them chargen their parents first. They'd have access to skills to learn from their parents. The background event tables would need to be kid stuff, too.

Well, it seems like an interesting way to get new would be players to allow them to play teenagers or to play themselves, as opposed to playing retired security people and multi-talented rogues.

But, the game is what it is, so I'm not really going to lobby for anything here, other than it strikes me that newer and younger players might be attracted to Traveller if they could play people nearer their age.

Whatever. It's not a big issue with me. I just thought I'd toss that out there. I understand Traveller a lot better now than I ever did as a pre-teen. So, there it is.

Thanks for the replies.

How do you handle parental SOC differences in what the kid gets?
