Confederate Space

Well, in My Traveller, there is no rebellion, and Virus is just a piece of "Speculative Fiction".

But then, most of the adventures I have run were either in the Beyond/Vanguard Reaches in the between 1090 and 1105 (pre-5th Frontier War era) or in the Reaver's Deep sector just before the Long Night.

The Solos were too smart and too proud to adopt those new Imperial made transponders.
Well, what government would accept a demand that they install black boxes manufactured by another state in their ships? It's a ludicrous idea. I think that if the Imperium tried it, all the neighbours would respond by banning any ship WITH such transponders from entering their territory, leading to a massive pressure from the entire Imperial mercantile community to have this silly idea squashed right now!

My take on the ubiquity of the chips is that all the neighbors reverse-engineered their own versions and installed them in their own ships[*]. That worked great until they ran into a race of disembodied psionic entities whose natural habitat was transponder chips, regardless of where they had been manufactured.

[*] Because the technology was superior to previous transponder technology. Not unforgeable, the way the Imperial propaganda claimed, but still a big improvement.
