Confused a little about twilight's peak. SPOILERS!

Ok, after hearing a lot about twilight's peak and liking the cool title, I got it.

It seems fairly well done by LBB era standards, but I'm confused on one point. SPoilers below.

Ok, the octagon society built an unstaffed shelter on that planet, and apparently managed to put it right on top of an Ancient base. Now, if quakes had opened fissures leading to the cavern the base was in over the years I'd have no problem, but as is it seems that the shelter and the base were connected. I mean, the shelter had droyne marking carved on it, and droyne coyns hidden it it, and a trapdoor that lead to chamber that lead to an ANcient door that could only be opened now by fear.

So how did they get connected? The warriors in the base could not have woken up and done it, they would hve nuked the base once they saw there were no leaders to lead them. Did the octagon society build the shelter down to the mysterious chamber that lead to the normally unopenable Ancient door and just leave it there?

As I said, I'm a little confused on this issue. Were I to be called on to run TP now, I would leave out the artificial connections and just go with natural fissures opened by quakes, unless an expert on TP can explain this to me.

Hmm...

Could the Octagon Society have been used as a cover for the Imperials (or anyone else for that matter) to exploit the Ancient base?

The Octagon society as a cover of Imperial Ancient research is an idea I've seen somewhere before...

Ah, not quite Imperial ;)

Hans Rancke-Madsen wrote an article for online JTAS, also available in the collected anthology on e23, which reveals a sinister purpose behind the Octagon society...

My opinion is that at some point, the Octagon Society stumbled upon the location of the base when seeking a site for a new shelter, then proceeded to pour all its funds into building an accessway to the base and trying to find ways to get into the base, which is what caused the society to go bankrupt.

The question is how did they find it in the first place? A chance densitometer reading?

Perhaps there was a fissure, maybe with the underground river, that they discovered (a source of fresh water would be a good location for a shelter). When the base was detected, the original fissure was blocked and the shelter was "properly" located, approximately above the base.
