Cosplay help

I have opted to do an Imperial Navy Uniform as part of a Cosplay event that I will be participating in.

I have settled that the uniform resembles that of the Battlestar Galactica uniform.

Save that it will be black with different markings - Yellow Starbursts on the shoulders and blank in the front.

Should one include a side arm? And, if so what type. I also opted for the Star Wars Imperial Officer cap.

And, do you think reflective raybands is too much...

I'd check first with the event rules, they should have the standard restrictions covered. Or check with local law enforcement regarding the law concerning replica weapons. Probably simpler to just forgo the side arm

Ray-Ban(r) actually, and yes, probably too much, but it depends on the event...

If you are challenged by local law enforcement you should bluster your way through the situation invoking your military status and explain you are indeed on official business with the Imperial Navy. I would advise also creating an identification card which you can offer to the law officers to prove your status.

Kafka,

Seeing you'll be a naval officer and "naval officer" almost equates "noble" in the OTU, your sidearm should be a revolver. "Should be" is the operative term here. Guns, even toy guns make people nervous.

You need to check with the event staff and/or the local police about replica weapons.

If guns are verboten, how about a nice ceremonial dirk?

As another touch, may I recommend a dark turtleneck under your uniform jacket? Thanks to "The Mote in God's Eye", "bodysleeves" were part of naval uniforms IMTU well before TNE and the RCES.

Since the Imperial Officer's cap just sorta screams Star Wars my own inclination would be to go with a normal kepi. Ray-Bans? Maybe, though I'd also consider some silvered granny glasses or some silvered wraparounds. Or some light welding glasses.

Any of a million ways to do it, none really wrong. It's the effect as a whole that counts in my book.

I'd say wear a beret , either red or black and add some kind of modified military pin to it, same with any rank tabs or pins. As far as prop weapons go you could use an airsoft pistol, with the holster peace bonded if needed. Don't forget to add a hand computer in a belt holster ( droid dhone, itouch or iphone) and an earpiece communicator (bluetooth earpiece) . An id tag on the chest would be a nice touch ( see wing commander the movie for examples)

Firearms are cool, so long as the muzzle is marked orange and it is a replicate...

I would not have said Officers and Nobility are the same in the OTU - there is a strong overlap but not completely. Yes, of course, the cap does scream Star Wars...is that not we all think of when we hear Imperial Navy...

Like the idea of a hand computer...I have an old Star Trek tricorder...that ought to do it.

I would save the colour red for Jumpsuits from Flight Deck...my idea is to portray a standard Imperial Officer on a command deck.

Do people have ideas for ranks and the location thereof...I always like the idea of miminalism and rank would signified by pops on the collar.

And, sure, if comes out right...I would be happy to share...

For undress uniforms IMTU I use stars and bars for the officers, displayed on a rectangular collar tab backed with the unit's facing color (Scouts/Recon green, Flight Crew lt. blue, Command Crew red, etc..). The dress uniform has all the braid, ribbons, and flashy stuff.

The rank insignia system is based on what the US Confederate Army used and works for both my Imperial and Colonial (Subsector for OTU) Navies. It's easy to remember and minimal in design so long as you forgo the elaborate braiding that was embroidered on the sleeve. Just silver metal tabs with either stars or bars for officers, shoulder patches for the rankers.

Ensign (Marine Lt.) - (exception here) single disk
Lt (Marine Cpt.) - single horizontal bar centered on collar tab
Lt. Cmdr (Marine Force Cmdr)- 2 bars
Cmdr - 3 bars
Captain - 1 star on collar tab
Commodore - 2 stars
Admiral - 3 stars

If you assume a collar standing 1" high, each bar is 1" long x 3/16th" wide. Stars are lined up horizontally and 3/4" across.

Anyhow these are just suggestions.
