CT and 3D ATUs

If you want to make an alternate traveller setting in 3D, what modifications (other than setting) if any would you have to make via house rules for the CT ruleset to work? Looking for a give and take - end result may be a PBeM or Play By Post campaign down the road. (Possibly, MT, T20, or CT - kinda looking for which one will need the least tweaking for an enjoyable low tech 3D campaign.)

For the record, I include economic issues in setting - but the rules spill into economics with things like muster out benefits etc. I'd like to keep those the same if possible - or at least only change minimally to reflect the setting.

The rest already is (except for table top versions of starship combat - I don't think I'm likey to take that task on!)

i dont think there was ever any data provided to
take it to 3D from 2D(CT)...some of the stars are
real but alot are not...the sol sector you
could probably get a realistic 3D effect but
after that it would be a 100% guess i think...

Think smaller - that that we know most of the stars within about 10 parsecs of Sol (but not all), and beyond that we only know the bright ones. There's hundreds of M and K V stars in the space covered by the Solomani Rim sector that we don't even know exist (which is why I'd just randomise the K and M V stars in that volume).

The RECONS list is the most complete list of stars near Sol - I've converted the layout to stacked subsectors on my realistic mapping page, but that's about as good as it'll get.

I'm not actually talking about porting OTU settings to the ATU. I'm talking about different star systems than the OTU - real and made up - in a 3D mapping program such as Astrosynthesis. The questions not in the in mapping as much as

"Is there anything outside the mapping/setting that would need changed to work if the star mapping is 3D."

SGB, there are only two things I see as potential issues:
1) Jump masking. Don't use it and there won't be a problem. If you don't use it, you would also show yourself wise and discerning. ;)
2) Jump maps. If the third dimension is too large, things "two hexes away" won't really be a J2 distant. That can be confusing, but it could be handled (especially if you're using computer programs).

What do you mean by "non-mapping rules"?

Mind if I ask for a bit more on this - what are your prime issues with jump masking? Is it more of an issue for 3D than for "flat map" traveller?
