CT Book 4 for T20??

Horatius

SOC-12
As I was building a few new characters for my new campaign, I got to thinking about Army and Marine characters in T20. Back int the old days, for a more evolved (read: tougher) character, we would break out CT Book 4: Mercenary. It broke military characters down and gave them more detail and made your military career more like a real one.

In T20, all marines are the same. THey have x number of terms and recieved y number of skills. Under CT, you could have a marine that was part of a tank crew, or was trained as a marine commando. People with different MOSs wind up with different skills. Players that took the extra step got a better grip on their character.

Before someone rips me a new one, I should mention that scouts and merchants also recieved their own books and could get just as, if not more detailed than the military.

Has anyone considered bringing back such books in a format that is T20 compatible? I know I'd love to have a set. Maybe someone has posted it and I just haven't seen it?

Horatius,

It sounds like a good idea. The best way to get it, though, is to write it yourself and hopefully QLI would consider printing it. Perhaps you should write up a proposal and submit it to the powers that be, and see if it gets approved.

Good luck,
Flynn

Marines can be made individual in T20 as well. You don't have to do a fixed number of terms - you can serve as many as you successfully re-enlist for. The prior service tables are just simplified versions of Book 4, so you can end up with Marines that have been involved in a number of different actions. MOS is not as distinct as in Book 4 but it can still be covered by using the MOS feat.
In short, it is still possible to creat a Marine Tanker, Pilot, Combat Engineer or Artillery Gunner.

They aren't all the same. They all will have served different 4 year assignments, as opposed to the one year assignments, have different decorations, and different skill sets. Remember that the big diffence between a Marine in T20 and CT/MT is that in T20 the Marine is much better than other classes in combat capability. (BAB and weapon feat selection) Also remember that in T20 you are not required to take Class levels in the Prior History you are serving. So you can specialize and get similar differences in skill sets. For example you could take levels as a Rogue, a Mercenary, a Traveller, and/or Ace Pilot, all while serving in the Marines. MAtter of fact while serving in the Marines there is no requirement for taking any Marine Levels, though why you would do that is beyond me.

You could work on class combinations for career paths. eg, a marine pilot could alternate between levels in marine and levels of professional. Maybe with the appropriate class skills and feat options of both being used as options for the 'marine pilot' sub-class.
ie level 1. marine1(marine pilot):BAB, saves and starting feats (as marine).
bonus feats: Brawling, heavy metal, high morale, tactics I, vessel (aircraft), ves.(grav), ves.(ground), ves.(ships boat),weapon prof.(ships weapons), weapon spec., PMOS, EW specialist, ves. specialisation.
class skills: Fwd. Obs, gambling, gather info, gunnery, leader, liaison, P/admin, pilot, spot, survival, t/any.
Level 2. marine1/professional1 (marine pilot).
This time picking up BAB, saves, skill points etc as a professional but choosing from the same list of skills and feats as above.
This method could easily be done for other specialists such as intelligence, engineers etc.
