CT Only: CT HG2 maximum ship size by computer

mike wightman

SOC-14 10K
Before I start typing up my analysis of HG through the TLs there is still one thing that bugs me:
am I interpreting the minimum computer required for a hull correctly?

page 26:
Ship is the ship requiring this computer
as a minimum; TL is tech level.

So I get this:

TL7/8, comp 2, max hull C (3,999t)
TL9, comp 3, max hull J (9,999t)
TL10, comp 4, max hull N (49,999t)
TL11, comp 5, max hull Q (99,999t)
TL12, comp 6, max hull X (999,999t)
TL13, comp 7, max hull Y (1,000,000t+)
TL14, comp 8, max hull Z (unlimited)

Am I doing it right?

Not exactly.

TL5-6, Comp 1 9 (999t)
TL7-8, Comp 2, C (3,999t)
TL9, Comp 3, J (9,999t)
TL10, Comp 4, N (49,999t)
TL11, Comp 5, Q (99,999t)
TL12, Comp 6, X (999,999t)
TL13 Comp 7, unlimited

The TL is the minimum computer required for that tonnage, so the lower models are good up to that minimum. I think you have the basic concept, just a bit off on the starting tech and unlimited starting point for the TL boundaries.

One subtlety I had missed until just now is you can have effectively small craft controls, no computer, up to 599t for non-jump craft.

You can't build spaceships below TL7 in HG...

Indeed, but you may be stuck on a planet and have to have a mechanical-analog monster put in to take off again. So there is a limit.

And besides, how did the Nazis make it to their moon base? Huh?

Looked at that again, and there could be another way to interpret that dropoff after Model/6- that you CAN'T build a million ton or unlimited ship, and such things are one-off referee builds/artifacts.

"We need to load Jump-1, it's stored in Cargo Hold B -- round up everyone from Engineering to move the crates, and for the love of the Ancients don't drop any of the boxes or we'll never get the punch-cards sorted again before we reach Jump Limit!"

Hmm, silly me, didn't go to the Consolidated Errata.

There we find a table which I will shorten to model and ship USP size range.

0,0
1,1-9
2,A-C
3,D-J
4,K-N
5,P-Q
6,R-X
7,Y+unlimited

So, that would appear to be the definitive word on the matter.

Oh, and no hanging chad on those J-1 programs. Huge misjump threat.

"Roll 10+ to sort the card deck correctly, critical failure means you got it in an order that actually executes, but does a dramatically wrong thing."

"We at TL 6 are not some primitive savages. Let me show you our latest Hard Drive. Less than 1 dTon, 1000 kg and only Cr 74,449. Stores 5MB of data on 50 24-inch-diameter disks with 600 milisecond access time and no more punch cards blues?"
