Darriens vs. Sword Worlders

SJE

SOC-8
So the high tech, intellectual Darriens (who look like space elves) and the lower tech, militaristic Sword Worlders (who look like space vikings) are neighbours in the Spinward Marches.

They've fought wars against each other, but what is the root of their dislike? And when the media mention the other side, what kind of xenophobic and racist slurs do they hurl at each other?

Old causes come down to the Sword Worlders being upstart carpetbaggers who moved in to Darrian territory when they weren't looking.

You could go back a lot further and draw discord from the Varangians used by Byzantium to keep the Turks at bay (there is a heavy Turkic component to the Terrans who melded with the Darrians).

More recently and specifically, the Sword Worlders and Darrians both claim the Entropic Cluster, which changes hands during every Frontier War, and sometimes more often than that.

The Sword Worlders are a pretty diverse lot. They're independent worlds derived from an original culture (with local drift over time) linked politically. They wouldn't all think the same, and like most humans wouldn't come together too willingly until they were collectively threatened by an external force, or so is my take on it all.

If that holds reasonably true, then some of the Sword Worlders won't be too fussed about the Darriens, especially the ones on the border with the 3I.

Well, if you go to this thread, you can at least get some ideas about what the Sword Worlds might be saying.

Not sure what the Darrian language is like, although I could supply some possibilities.

Heres the thing though- actual foreign languagues and syllables- not particularly useful in a game (seriously I remember one game in the Imperial Court- trying to pronouce the Emperors surname- more distracting than useful- and makes his dynasty sound like drunks) . I'm looking more for the core of the dislike between the Swordies and Darriens and the colloqoulisms that might follow.

Thx.

Or Vulcans.

Not really. Some Sword Worlders emulate a highly romanticized conception of their ancestors, which include iconic Viking elements like horned helmets, katanas, and beer steins, but most neither look nor act like Space Vikings.

The root of their dislike is that they've fought wars against each other. :p

No, the root is probably their mutually incomprehensible lifestyles.

Going by earth examples it would probably be very non-PC
- Darrians = effeminate
- Sword Worlders = primitive and unevolved

So using real world terms would probably cause problems.

If i was doing it I'd pick terms or phrases for effeminate / primitive from the real world and then make up alternatives.
