Does It FIT?

Continuing my reading of the 91 Traveller articles published in White Dwarf over the years...I bring you another nifty little tid-bit you might want to use in your games.

This one's a quicky.

It's a nice, clean little rule that will allow you to find out quickly if clothing and fitted equipment (Vacc Suit) will fit properly.

The GM simply rolls 2D to determine the item's "size".

If any of the three physical stats a character has matches the size of the item, the item will fit properly.

EXAMPLE: Dargi attempts to climb into a Vacc Suit. The GM throws 2D to determine the Vacc Suit's size. A "9" is he result.

If any of Dargi's three physical stats are a 9, then the Vacc Suit will fit.

Supplement Four's Tweak...

What I'd do is throw for size using a 3D roll. That way, characters aren't penalized for having high stats above 12.

[EDIT: It might be smarter to make that a 3D - 3 roll. That way, you don't have results of 16, 17, or 18. A "1" is possible. And, the average number turns out to be a "7" (average of 10 -3 = 7).

A character has 3 physical stats, and a 3D roll yields 15 different numbers. This means a character basically has a one-in-five chance of being able to wear (given that all three of his physical stats are different...if not, he's probably hard to fit) an item he comes across.

When I go to the shoe store, it's amazing how often they don't have my size (which is not that wierd...a 9.5), so a 20% chance of something fitting seems reasonable to me.

GMs may want to go a little easier on items that are meant to fit variously sized people. For example, emergency Vacc Suits must be designed to accommodate many shapes and sizes.

In such a situation, I'd consider allow the character's physical stats to be within "1" point of the size rating of the garment in question.

So, for an emergency Vacc Suit, a "9" is rolled with the 2D size throw.

The character trying to wear the Vacc Suit has stats 74A.

This character can wear any of these sizes: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.

Which allows him to wear he emergency Vacc Suit.

That one's pretty helpful. Very close to what we did in D&D way back for armor fitting iirc. We were always finding better armor, well if you could forget the bloodstains of the previous user

I think we had something like a "close enough" rule. It allowed that items found, while not a tailored fit, could be made to function. Cinch the strap tighter, or add a belt to lengthen it, or such. It imposed a small penalty but it was better than nothing.

I'd add that to the idea.

And I'd probably just average the character's physical stats and roll 2D6. If equal it's a perfect fit. If within 1 either way it's a good fit (no penalty). If the difference is 2 it's a poor fit (penalty). More than 2 and it just won't fit.

EDIT: Ah, did I miss your own "close enough" bit or did you add it while I was typing
Cool anyway. Yeah your tweak might be the better way to go.

BTW, you know what's not-so-intutive about this little quicky rule?

It's that a plain old average joe, with stats 777, would be very hard to fit!

Luckily, in practice, we see CT characters with different numbered stats, on the average.

I dig that.

It was there. I added the "EDIT" though, so the dice throw is 3D -3.

I think all vacc suits are supposed to be adjustable, as one of the double adventures says something about some specific vacc suits not being adjustable (I think). It would probably take some time though. In an emergency you could probably wear a vacc suit that is to big without adjustment.

Of course, if you've been playing Traveller with RuneQuest rules all these years, the whole thing is taken care of ...

You have a complete collection of WD Traveller articles? I don't mind tellin' you, I'm a mite jealous! ;)

I have five or six issues of Dragon and a WD "best of. . . ." that get worked into our game.

So this one character can wear almost every vacc suit made, eh? Nice... but how does that work? Is he a shape-shifter?

Shouldn't a character's size be the height & weight of the character?

Just use the height/weight rules from any number of games to determine your characters actual dimensions, and then go from there (do the same for those suits you find) and it will be far more realistic.
