Far Future gadgets (and toys for the rich)

Anyone every play with the idea of "mutation in a jar"? Need a costume for a mascarade party? Take a pill and out comes the fish/amphibian/reptile/furry mammal in all of us.

On one of the more liberal core worlds IMTU, its fashionable for extremely rich teens to assume different totems depending on their "personal statement" ... there are humans with reptilian features, humans with feline features, humans with bovine features, etc.

It takes only a few painless treatments and the effects are controllable and easily reversible; atleast that's what they advertise

Changing the whole genetic makeup of an adult person AND making it take effect quickly? This should be high TL as it'll probably involve nanotechnology to some degree or another. Ofcourse, modifying embryos when they're still just a single cell is far easier, and far lower TL - probably 8, with the more bizzare applications coming in TL9 and 10.

^ As I stated, it's a process that takes several treatments and is not cheap! And the results can never be truly reversed, but TPTB never tell anyone that.

As the adventure I introduced this tech in played out, after reversal everything looks human again. But internally those animal characteristics reintroduced are still present and manifest themselves from time to time. Sort of a reverse Island of Dr. Moreau.

Anything like the "holograms" as presented in Star Drek is going to require a lot more than simple tricks of light. You can't project an image, flat or hologram into thin air. Now if you can use some kind of flying nano-bot to make a suitable screen and insure your projector has clear line of sight then you could pull off some of the tricks done. But if you have nano-bots capable of doing that why not just have them all "hold-hands" to create a more solid reality of what you want to present?

With some of the previous talk of clothes that are nearly magical then a lot more costumes would be a much easier to create. Now, could clothing fit tight enough yet act like skin so one could nearly have fur, scale, feathers, or any other surface? (and what other surfaces would alien animals might have? but that would be another thread). Or, could body hair be convinced to grow quickly everywhere to be short and different colors?

But changing the skull to look like various creatures, e.g., a crocodile, would probably be painful or impossible.
And there lies the rub! Ever hear any of the horror stories about Miami Beach or Brazilian hacks posing as plastic surgeons? Slicing and carving without licenses in the dimly lit back rooms of strip mall office space?

The point of my adventure was that the technology, although really good at creating a hybrid, was not a reliable as first thought; particularly in the hands of fly-by-night practioners.

</font>[/QUOTE]Especially if it's illegal in proper society but still wanted by those who seek the exotic.

"Oh of course your government would ban it. In it's infancy dna recoding and structural bio-engineering were both dangerous and permanent, not to mention painful. We've come a long way working outside the law since they clamped down on development. You've heard the rumors that the reason the government outlawed it was so they could benefit the rich and powerful while keeping the rest of society unenhanced? Of course you have. Now if you'll just step into my procedure room we can begin building the new you." <herds chickens out of room and off stained recliner>

  • TL-15: Standard Atmosphere Tester: Cr5,000 A large PDA-sized specialized computer and sensor. 12cm long x 5cm wide x 2cm deep, .5 kilos. Battery life, 2 weeks; recharge time, 1 hour. The computer has all the major atmosphere types loaded, plus five thousand known variants and special conditions. It can also store up to one billion biological signatures. The sensor is a combination mass-spectrometer, microscopic densitometer, x-ray, and molecular detector. Its purpose is to test and assure the safety of the present atmosphere, and it can do so with great accuracy. It requires only three seconds to fully analyze the basic atmospheric contents, and a mere sixty to test the safety of biologicals present. Its onboard database can be loaded and reloaded from any ship's computer. It is fully ready for rugged environments, and can withstand a six meter drop with no damage. The Imperial Scouts commissioned SuSag to create a new atmosphere tester in 990 shortly after Gavin ordered the Second Survey. SuSag completed the design in 991 and fielded the first devices into the IISS by 992. Even as late as 1116, a compliment of two is found as standard equipment in the ship's locker aboard all IISS operated vessels, and as many as twelve aboard survey vessels. Available to the public in non-IISS markings. Individualized designs are available for a Cr250 surcharge for single prints (with lower rates of Cr50 available for mass production). Its production is licensed to sector level corporations across the Imperium by SuSag, and it can be found for sale in starship outfitter shops anywhere.</font>

Neat stuff. I can see it, and maybe even before TL15.

The nanomachines already exist to do this, yes, nature's finest nanomachine, the virus. Virus's are already used to insert new genetic material into a target cell. With a proper understanding of the genetic code you just tailor your very special virus to insert the proper modifications into the proper cell types and presto changeo fur. To reverse the process, another virus to "completely" erase the changes. More complex, but also not improbable, at TL15 maybe they have fine control over cell differentiation (the process whereby a cell decides what kind of cell, skin, muscle, liver, bone, nerve, etc. it will be from a sort of proto state). They treat your skin to undifferentiate the cells and then coax them to develope (differentiate) into the new cell type.

^ A virus would be the preferred method of introducing genetical material.

As I stated, this was never meant to be a perfected process IMTU. The concept, in fact, came from brainstorming for a Halloween game and I tried to imagine how I could make a high tech werewolf.

The unfortunate lycanthrope had received the treatment and the reversal but things somehow went awry, with the poor soul entirely unaware that he/she was doing the killing. I explained it away as a 2nd, more base, personality that developed after the treatment activated certain long dormant, instinctual mammalian genes.

It was an interesting game, especially when it was found that the virus used in the treatment could be trasmitted through saliva!!!

<snip of list that is cruncy in more ways than one>
That would obviously be a list for produced by a manufacturer in the Solomani Sector. ;)

I'll try and think of what I can. I remember reading something about the history of US Military MRE development . . . now if I can only find it again.

  • TL-10: Mil/Field Food Packs: Cr3, .5 Kilo A mass-produced meal pack. It comes in the same format as the Expedition Food Pack, except that the ingredients are the minimum acceptable quality. The stew-mixture that results from the addition of water is reported to have an "off" smell, and that the tastes range from bland to less than pleasant. Most users add spices or mix in additional foodstuffs. Non-toxic. Guaranteed safe and edible for 200 years. Wrapper disintegrates into harmless waste within ten minutes of removal.</font>
  • TL-10: High Passage Day Food Pack: Cr150, 10 Kilos A combination pack of several food and beverage choices, all of high quality (including brand-name items that are expensive solely because of their name). It contains sufficient materials for three meals in an easy to purchase and handle package, and where the contents are engineered to require minimal cooking and preparation. Ship's stewards typically break open several packs at once on a voyage and mix and match the contents to vary meal delivery to each High Passenger. It is a favorite purchase of tramp freighters who usually do not have epicurean chef's aboard. Manufactured by sector and subsector corporations across Charted Space. Available in any starship outfitter's inventory. Shelf life is six months. Cases of twelve are available for Cr1600.</font>
  • TL-10: Mid Passage Day Food Pack: Cr80, 10 Kilos A less expensive version of the High Passage Day Food Pack. It economizes on its content and choices of vendors, but otherwise is the same. The food and beverage quality is still above average, though. Shelf life is one year. Cases of twelve are available for Cr850.</font>
