Favourite Rebellion Setting?

Elliot

SOC-14 1K
I have just been reading the Rebellion stuff again (including Survival Margin as a digest of events)while on Christmas r'n'r from the office.

I was wondering what was the best setting for role playing in the Rebellion - we always played in the Marches (as the campaign grew out of CT). This was good as it allowed the rebellion to come into the game without taking over the basic fun of adventuring.

On second reading, I think a campaign in the Daibei faction might be cool - what with Solomani infiltrators (a player character being a secret solsec operative would make for good tension in the game), Lucanic terroists and Aslan raiders?

Ideas/opinions anyone?

The great thing about the rebellion is that it was the first attempt and by-large-only to integrate things on an Imperium-wide front. Somewhere else**, I discuss the merits of having a Rebellion-milieu sourcebook.

For me I actually liked to play out the conflict between Lucan, Dulinor and Stephon act. And, I actually favoured Dulinor as the likely successor. As I saw within Dulinor a noble character akin to Brutus who sought to slay a weak Emperor in order to create a greater Imperium. But, again, his hubris was that he was a coward when it came to the reinforcements from planetside.

Lucan was a much more sinister character who was part 5% Anthony but 95% Caligula. And, Stephon playing an inept Claudius whose forays into battle only cause death thus provoking him to retreat.

My rebellion was also very much the backdrop to events as Marc/DGP wanted it to be. As in the regular Imperium, one cannot expect an entire Imperium battlefleet to drop out of jump and ask for a planet to swear alignance to whatever faction but that was the reality of the rebellion.

The wars that Intelligence Agencies are also very interesting as you have discovered. Save imagine how fragmented they must be. All sorts of potential for rogue agents as long sleeper agents are now awakened. Throw into that cauldron that there were even the possibility of worlds who were wanting to throw any form of Imperial rule for a period of rule by pocket empire polities, petty warlords, and the emergence of proto-TEDs. That is why I would want to see a revisit to the Rebellion era, not only as a wargame but as an actual milieu sourcebook.

My favorite time is Hard Times. I'd love to see the New Era arise from the hard times, rather than from virus.

I found locations between factions the most enjoyable and challenging.

Gushemege Sector: Lucan, Dulinor, and Strephon all have a presence in the sector and the front lines shift back and forth. I personnaly favor Dulinor, but I allow the characters to follow the course they wish. Much opportunity for mercenary ops, covert ops, rescue missions, nail missions. Highly dynamic background. Heavy in Black War strikes. By Hard Times, most planets blasted and radiated rubble.

Lishun Sector: Between the Restored Vilani Empire, Antares, and Lucan. Also being plundered by Vargr invasions. The excellent DGP campaign, The Flaming Eye takes place here. Excellent for Rebellion Era and Hard Times. Does not suffer from Black War as seriously as Gushemege.

My favorite Rebellion setting never happened.
a) The Imperium fragments into its MT/1120 configuration.

b) Lucan is 'replaced' by a group of Admirals who are tired of his foolishness but are invested in fighting for the security of what is left of the Imperium. (I never bought into Lucan's foresight to shoot everyone smarter than he; I always figured there were all sorts of professional warfighters and spies in the Imperium who would act first.)

c) Hard Times does not occur; Signal GK never occurred so no Virus; ditto the Empress Wave.

d) Pocket empires develop along the hard to control borders between factions. Who they swear allegience to is a matter of speculation.

Mix and match factions to your individual taste and there you go. . .
