Films, books and plays into adventures

There's also the Larry Niven Known Space stories. Most of them will do. Also "Legacy of Herot" is a good save the colony from the monster-critter story.

I'll also grab adventure ideas from songs. A couple:

"Hotel California" is a creepy one full of alien experiments and emotion-feeders.

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"--though I made it a 26,000ton freighter which misjumped. Pirates found it and used it as a hidden base.

Looking at my DVD some other movies we can't forget are all the Hope and Crosby "Road" movies.

Anything by H.Beam Piper, Jerry Pournelle's "The Prince" (collected books of Falkenberg's Legion), "Mote in God's Eye", "The Gripping Hand", and "King David's Spaceship". Chanur series by C.J.Cherryh (Aslan client states maybe?).

I had a thought today for a mature-themed adventure. You could easily adapt the movie "Dangerous Liaisons" into an adventure set among an enclave of decadent nobles. Seduction for revenge to destory a rival's marriage, or as a prelude to a blackmail scheme.

Some of the old (1960s) Jonny Quest cartoons have good potential. There's even one where they're using gamer dialogue... "Ok, we're stranded on a deserted ship in the middle of nowhere with a monster running lose and a hold full of mysterious cargo. What do we do?"
I love that episode. They find the Chinese cook hiding in the freezer.

Mr. Johnson,

They certainly had a fixation with Asians in the 'Jonny Quest' writers room. Other than that, JQ is definitely Traveller fodder.

There was a recurring evil scientist foil; whose name escapes me, for Dr. Quest. How about that espionage/sabotage robot he sent to scope out Doc Quest's latest ray gun? You know, the one that looked like a daddy longlegs spider?

Other than the Yeti episode, the one that scared me the most as a young Whippersnappersnade featured an invisible, electricity devouring monster they first had to paint and then lure into a cave with light bulbs. Woo-eee! Was that one scary!

talk about dredging up old mememories! yes, it was scary at the time.

Hmm might as well lend a hand to Shane up yonder way with this..

Robert ludlum's Horse Underwater/ jack Higgins Thunder point--a lost sub that holds a secret.
In Ludlum's, the wreck is used to stash narcotics (heroin, hence the title)..In Higgins, data incriminating Edward V of possible collusion with Nazi's is at stake, blackmailing the Crown the threat..

For Gateway-"To catch A King"/Higgins again, lets say, someone tries to kidnap the Emperor's heir, end the Rim War? Only problem is..
they grab a stand-in. But since the real heir is elsewhere...A rescue must be attempted as if he really was!

Starliner, david drake-excellent adventures aboard a rte run-even attempted hijacking, romance, and a brush war at several stops.

Movies/TV..Agreed: Firefly can be heisted lock stock and jump-drive, every one of em. 5 star stuff! great for the small trader crew player set.
The cross alien intrigues from Babylon 5-change some races, and the setting near a border..voila!

Some other westerns: Red River (a cattle drive/cargo hijacked), The Searchers ( a quest for a kidnapped young damsel), Guns for Sister Sarah (mercenaries/smugglers apply here);

Most action films can be easily adapted and dropped into play with little work for dirtside fun.
Agreed, Pitchblack ready made marooning in space.
Alien, and Aliens, hey we've done 'em to death, but every now and again, ya can sneak something like "The THing" in there! brrr-scary!

For Books/movies, murder mysteries are good brain stumpers. Ten Little Indians etc, any of Agatha Christie's; or for Low tech worlds, Ellis Peters "Cadfael" series!

This is a good thread. Me likes it!

Peter F Hamilton, about anything, but the "Reality Dysfunction" is my fave.

Ian Banks' "Culture" novels.

For film "Lawrence of Arabia" has some potential, file off the serial numbers and see what happens. I find lots of material in film noir, "The Maltese Falcon", "Blood Simple", "Kiss Me Deadly", "Key Largo", and the like.

There's a writer I like just cause his stories are so damn good, Joe R Lansdale, I heavily suggest "Mucho Mojo" and "Two Bear Mambo".
