Wow, I started playing in the early 80's and as a group we really played the "holy trinity" of that era (AD&D, Call of Cthulhu, and Traveller). Most of my early purchases were from "Walker's Hobby Shop" in St. Charles and I'd ride my bike down there to buy stuff with allowances and scavenged quarters...
Our initial games were a weird mesh because while I was reading the "classics" like Dumarest and the Norton's Free Trader's stuff we were also watchi8ng Star Wars, reading Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the Foundation series, and one of the group had a dad who worked at Fermilab - so our level of out there science became very outre, very quickly.
But we were a bunch 12-13 year olds when we started playing and our games pretty much reflected that. Lots of explosions...
