For Sale CLASSIC TRAVELLER!!!!

Less than (4) Four hours to go in this FANTASTIC Auction!!!! ...... Better BID NOW !!!!!

Hi there:

I don't like this "mixed" model of open and secret/private bids.

Has the other bidder considered this? How would he or she like it if there were another secret bidder? The price would just magically be going up, up, up... At least on Ebay, with a private auction, you can see that other bids appeared, and when. You can trust that they are other, unique users.

I invite bidders to bid publicly.

Anyway, assuming you get any other bidders, once it's over, it seems like you'd want to announce the IDs of all the people who participated...not just the winner. (Although, again, just announcing it is not as transparent as actual, public bids posted here.)

Later,
Dan

Dancha,

You don't like much, do you? Bitch, bitch, bitch, ever since this whole thing started.

"Has the other bidder considered this? How would he or she like it if there were another secret bidder?"

Yes, they have - because I'm the other bidder. If you'd thought about it instead of whining, you could have placed your bid anonymously too. All you needed to do was PM Jim as I did. I didn't want my interest in the materials trumpeted across the CotI boards because I didn't want dozens of PMs asking me to sell bits and pieces if I won the auction.

BTW, drop the term 'secret'. I was an anonymous bidder - you see them in auction houses every day.

"The price would just magically be going up, up, up... At least on Ebay, with a private auction, you can see that other bids appeared, and when. You can trust that they are other, unique users."

Oh so THAT is the problem, huh? Jim is such a criminal mastermind that he invented the other bidder just to grind a higher price out of you? Jim has faithfully announced each and ever bid. Period. You can lay your paranoid fantasies to rest.

"I invite bidders to bid publicly."

I've gone public so you can now shut your cake hole. I asked Jim to keep my bid anonmymous, it wasn't his idea. No scam is being run here.

"Anyway, assuming you get any other bidders..."

Yeah, that's right, Jim made it all up as a way to cheat you.

"... once it's over, it seems like you'd want to announce the IDs of all the people who participated...not just the winner."

Jim has already announced he will do that.

No matter how long you hold your breath and complain, this isn't e-Bay. Let me repeat that; This isn't e-Bay. This is where Jim decided to auction the materials and this is how Jim decided to auction them. Period.

Now either bid or shut up.

Disgustedly,
Larsen

Good evening:

Wow. I guess I touched a nerve.

Larsen: I'm really disappointed, and hurt. I may have annoyed you, but why be so antagonistic? I've _always, always_ enjoyed reading your posts on TML, here, etc. I have had a lot of respect for you. I love the precision and style in your posts. You have enhanced my experience of Traveller.

I tell you, it sucks to discover that you've annoyed the hell out of a Someone you didn't know but respect.

I envy you. For the first time in years I have a sizable chunk of cash saved up. I thought what I had put me "into range" for this. But just barely -- and not against a determined fellow bidder. This collection is quite something. If you've googled me, you may have found my collection, which is extensive. Amazingly, 30 of the 70 items are ones I'm after, which in large lots like this one is a challenging ratio to obtain. So it looked like such a great opportunity.

At least I can rest assured this stuff is going to a good home.

Jim: I retract my bid.

Larsen: if you're fortunate, you'll get the whole kit and caboodle for $421!

Sincerely, and good night,
Dan

Sir,

Yes, you did. You did more than simply annoy me. I wouldn't have posted what I did if I had been simply annoyed. What you posted impugned both Jim and myself. Re-read this sentence: You can trust that they are other, unique users. Re-read the paragraph in which it appears and think about what it says.

You all but say that this auction has been a scam, a con game, a criminal attempt to cheat people. Nearly all of your posts to this thread have implied this; your worries about shipping costs, you bewilderment that eBay wasn't being used, and your worries about payment methods for example.

All of your remarks may have been posted in complete innocence. You could have very well not meant to imply any of it. It could have not even crossed your mind. But, for a week now, you've been harping on the same theme. What am I to assume when you continue to post your concerns again and again - even after Jim offers explanation after explanation?

I may have assumed the worst, but I felt I had to speak up after that sentence; You can trust that they are other, unique users. I now know that my assumptions were incorrect and you have my apologies.

I do hope, once all of the unpleasentness brought on by both of our misunderstandings fades away, that we can continue to enjoy the pleasure that both of our work in Traveller brings us. And, if I have lost your respect due to my outburst, it is only what I deserve.

Truly sincerely,
William R. Cameron, aka Larsen
