Ahhh... so they do have one. Interesting... I'd never stumbled across it the few times I surfed their site. Well that explains why they don't see the need to make room for many amateur fanzines. They've got a good zine already so why add to the competition?

(It's also very interesting to see that SJGames has changed its Pyramid to something like Mongoose's Signs & Portents, a downloaded .pdf instead of a web-based magazine.)

I didn't recognize you and your post count is rather low, so I checked out both your profile, your posts, and the content of those posts. Tell me truthfully now, do you work for Mongoose in some fashion?

To put is simply Mongoose Publishing's Fair Use Policy won't allow us to reference the original Traveller universe and include their rules at the same time, unless it's in Foreven sector.

If i didn't know that I'd be too unfocused and undisciplined to do a good job, I'd start a fanzine dedicated to setting material only. No rules, just background. OTU material would dominate, of course, but I'd accept material for any setting[*]. Maybe have a section called Other Worlds (Or maybe MindGames (http://jtas.sjgames.com/login/article.cgi?208) ) for other settings.

They always have, even during the old "dead tree" days. How many issues of Signal GK were there? Third Imperium? Security Leak? The Adjutant? While the 'net has lowered the "publishing" bar for fanzines, it has done little for their lifespan. Fanzines naturally have a short lifespan, deciding not to start one because it won't last long is like deciding not to plant annuals in your garden because they won't come back next spring.

And to think I still have a few copies of Ed Edwards' Working Passage on hand..... as well as the handful of Gregg Giles' Security Leak.... and who could forget Magnus Abel's Between Worlds?

Are there any young players hereabouts? Or is this, like, a control-line flying board?

guys, this fanzine is going to be released first week in April, everything complies with the fair use policy.

Fanzines might have a short lifespan or they may not, just because something has happened in the past doesn't mean it has to happen again. Also Stellar reaches is not dead, just on hold for a while (reference an earlier post). Out of courtesy I will contact Marc Miller to advise him of the fanzine's existence as I did when I launched my Traveller website.

Frontier report is going to be something special, with only 2 issues a year coming in at an average of 100 pages each time. The MegaTraveller Journal consistently came in at 96 pages, that's what I am aiming for. In 6 months I can fill 96 pages on my own, but would much rather have submissions and give someone else a chance. Frontier report will feature quality art/representations and quality work.

I'm just trying to do something nice for the community, yet people are quite happy to write it off before it's even released, or say 'not much point' fanzines only have a short lifespan. As mentioned in some previous positive posts, not bothering because of short lifespans is like not buying a puppy or getting a cat, 'what's the point it will be dead in 15 years'.

So What! Get it while it's around, life is too short!

While I'm thinking of it, most traveller lines have only had a lifespan of a few years, are they also pointless?

I personally know that Mongoose is not that bad to work with, if you approach them first about issues versus letting them find out later.

This is not about Mongoose, they've obviously got their own ideas regarding where the Traveller universe should be going and that's ok, it's their train set. It also seems that they are happy to do it without Fan support, which is also fine, (they bought the licence).

Just for the record the Traveller IP doesn't belong to them, it belongs to FFE, which is why they have to have a fair use policy courtesy of Marc Miller's Insistence. Well done Marc. If this wasn't the case then you can bet that restrictions would be even tighter.
