GaryCon - Into the Kinunir

Good evening, all! I just got home from day 1 of GaryCon, where I played in Marc's adventure "Into the Kinunir". We had eight Traveller fans. Since I'm not sure if Marc is running it again, I won't give any spoilers, but we had a great time.

We used Marc's simplified chargen from "Can You Survive Traveller Character Generation". My Merchant was pretty useless, only having one term and sub-average stats (564755, with no skill higher than level-1), but I did what I could to help the group.

Fun adventure, great group, and it's always a joy to sit around a table and talk Traveller.

Now I just have to figure out a plan to start a Traveller game in my area.

Is that in Gary, Indiana? And where is it held. I live near Zion, in Illinois, and grew up near Gary.

Actually, it is in Lake Geneva, WI at the Grand Geneva - just a little northwest of you (I grew up in Waukegan; now I live in the land of Cheese & Beer). It's named after Gary Gygax. Many of the remaining "old guard" of the TSR days attend; Jim Ward, Ernie & Luke Gygax, et cetera.

There's a few Traveller games (all sold out), one Star Frontiers game that I saw (also sold out before I could get in), but it's mostly fantasy. It runs until Sunday - I'll be back on Saturday; Marc is doing a Q&A session at 9am. He also has a booth in the vendor area. He didn't bring CD's, but had a few T-Shirts, some of the Challenge Coins, and other sundries.

This was my first visit to GaryCon. Was definitely worth the visit. I wish I could go all four days, but I have to work Friday and Sunday.

In some respects, I might be considered one of the TSR Old Guard, as I used to work GenCon on a regular basis when in Milwaukee. As I am currently a tax widower, I will have to see about running up there, maybe tomorrow and definitely on Saturday.

Made it there today, and will be back tomorrow and maybe Sunday. I would have loved to join the Sturmgeschutz and Sorcery game, or the Orc's Drift Game, but had to leave early. Might have made some business contacts.

I did have a nice chat with Marc, and he's looks to be in good shape. However, his better half is keeping track of him. I did pick up a copy of the Grognards book by Loren, and look forward to reading through it. It looks to be a nice sized convention.

Charles, if you or any other Traveller players get there, look for the guy riding the electric scooter. That will be me. It would be nice to meet some of you in the flesh.

At this point, it's mostly me that is the roadblock. I've been dealing with a huge creative block lately (over the past few years actually). But, ideas have started flowing, and I'm writing them down and building the idea library back up.

I may not make it to GaryCon tomorrow - fighting off a nasty cold. We shall see what tomorrow morning brings.

Had a nice time at Gary Con, even if I did not play any games. I did have time to chat some with Marc, and wish to report to the forum that he is doing well. I did get some stuff from him, as one of the books he had hit my weak spot, weaponry.

I also had a chance to connect with a couple of guys from the old TSR and Gen Con in Wisconsin days, as well as setting up some other contacts.

I would call it a nice sized convention, and I would encourage forum members within driving distance of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to try and make it next year. The facility is very nice, and they even do table service with pizza.

I have a friend that drove from NH to attend. He got to play a Pathfinder 2 playtest with the Paizo team. I'm jealous of him and of you guys that got to play Traveller with and/or see Marc.

Cheers,

Baron Ovka
