Group One Traveller material

okay I've seen CT material from 'Group One' publications on e-bay. Great Maker the cover art is *bad*

But what about the material?

Anything in there worth purchasing or should I look upon this as collectable material for compleat-ists only?

TIA

Yow! What's the nicest way I can say this?

You know that signature which compares cowards who send out malware to someone wanting to sneak manure into passersby's pockets? They could slip the Group One material instead, and one would hardly notice the difference.

You can (as I did) use the maps and forget about everything else in the folders. And if you can pick them up for around 50 cents each, you won't feel too bad.

So, it is somewhere in the area of old Judges Guild quality and the first realm of Seeker deckplans (that were never meant for Traveller but sure got copted in the early days).

My scant knowledge of Group One is that it served as an inspiration for DGP's Grand Explorations (for a digest of this product look somewhere else on this board, under my login name)...

Kafka - Group One products are worse than Judge's Guild stuff, by a long long long long way.

Here is a summary:
Theta Borealis Sector - cacky map, book of UWPs ala Spinward Marches - write up (a few sentences) on evil Zerp aliens and the federations in TB sector. Production quality = photocopied typewriter written stuff.

World Books in the Theta Borealis (e.g. Wabor Parn, Pen Latols World, Lomodo IVa, Nithus, Sapies etc). Atrocious production value, acceptable write up on the world. Usual conceit = two species in competition for world resources.

These books sometimes contain mini adventures (micro adventures?) (normally of ruined/forgotten cities/temples) in the style of early AD&D but with scribbles a 5 year old could do and without the eerie erol otus art.

Encounters in the X quadrant - in effect bad ship deck plans that = dungeon bash without a plot.

In saying that, the essential ideas of Group One's Theta Borealis sector works (Virgin territories, archaeology, beyond the frontier - aliens not supressed by 3I, no or little Imperial contact, corporations exploiting left right and centre) is not bad and could be put into a nice format. Its just the execution that sucks big time.......

Actually, pass on Group One items if it costs you 50 cents. You should charge for looking at the stuff.

I suppose you could use it to start a fire but odds are the smoke would be toxic.

I have to say - if you can get Group One illegally (ie without paying) you do have a setting that alot of travellers want - something that is a bit space opera, a bit camp and outside the TI/GDW/DGP (i.e. professional) feel of real traveller.

I have to say I am an absolute sucker for Group One products and will spend a few bucks (take note ebay fraud boys - a few bucks, so dont push your luck) just for the horror value of the stuff coming through my door.

By the way I note that RARE OOP BRAND NEW Group One stuff was advertised in the Digest, mainly by people who are selling it on ebay today. So that shows how bad it is....
