GT conversion to MGT: Scout cruiser

Qstor2

I'm reposting this. It was posted on the Mongoose Forums

This is my rough conversion of the exploratory cruiser in GT: First In (p. 41) to MGT. The Scout service have always been a favor part of the game for me. Comments are welcome. Smile Mike

ISTR that the scout service has almost no large ships in OTU (Non-GT) sources, and their largest is their one AHL.

What purposes does this beast serve that isn't served as well or better by a fleet of 300Td ships?

ISTR that the scout service has almost no large ships in OTU (Non-GT) sources, and their largest is their one AHL.
"For this purpose, the exploration branch maintains many ship types not normally seen in other IISS duties, such as laboratory ships, free traders, cruisers, and several larger vessels." [Best of the JTAS, vol. 2, p. 14.]

"E. Five [AHLs] were transferred to the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service in 1040 for use as exploration cruisers and dispatch vessels." [Lightning Class Cruisers, p. 9]

With only that single data point you can't say if those five AHLs were an exceptional large transfer or more or less the usual percentage of any obsolete bunch of IN ships that'll fall into the hands of the couts, or even an unusually small percentage. It seems unlikely to me that the Scouts haven't gotten any other cruisers in 65 years.

Also, the Scouts have several (more than two, but less than many ;>) ships that are larger than cruisers, i.e. battleship-sized (though they may be transports, not battleships). If they have four or five ships that big, I think it reasonable to assume that they'd have more than five cruiser-sized ships.

OTOH, FI says that the Pytheas Class is "one of the largest ship classes in the Scout Fleet". Based on that, I'd be inclined to diregard the implication from the CT source that they have ships bigger than the AHLs and assume that there's only a few other cruiser classes, probably light cruisers. But if you don't accept GT as canon, I guess you're stuck with those several 100,000+ dT ships ...

What purposes does this beast serve that isn't served as well or better by a fleet of 300Td ships?
Check p. 41 of FI. For one thing, it can carry 290 dT of equipment, including pieces too large to be carried in the hold of a 300 dT ship.

Other "large" scouts...

The Milieu Zero book p31 offers a

Code:
Survey uses a special class of 1200-ton Leonov-class
survey vessels for its work. Apart from advanced sensor
suites and a flotilla of small craft, these also carry one or
two 100-ton scouts for detached survey work, usually insystem.
and

The llSS works closely with another organization: the

detailed maps of Imperial Space, and in assisting
Exploration Branch to map space beyond Imperial boundaries.
IS uses a unique fleet of Leonov-class survey ships,
equipped with the best sensors that the Imperium can

Scout Cruiser: The Scout Cruiser, based upon an
800-ton, streamlined, disk-shaped hull, is typically used for
extended exploration missions to a single system. While
ScoutlCourier ships range ahead to perform the initial cursory
survey, Scout Cruisers follow behind and gather
detailed information on each system’s worlds and life
forms...(much more follows)

These should provide a nice "forerunner" for newer models.

I've never seen much need for the scouts to have much over 1000Td ships, but those 800td ships make a good deal of sense to me.

I believe the logic in the M-zero book is that the 1200 ton ships are going to be out in the field for a long, long time.

They're the 2nd wave, and providing as much detail about a system as possible.

The first wave moves thru, finds suitable systems and then jumps to the next leaving behind a "breadcrumb trail" of information that the others follow and then expand on.

I think that's the logic behind the GT ship as well. Plus it's higher jump capability and docking space allows it to ferry Type S ships further out in areas they might not be able to reach. Plus it does a lot of intelligence work, thus the larger sensors and armaments.

Yeah, I haven't looked at First In for a while now, but it's one of the better Traveller (sans version-type) books I own.

I like the adventures in the back quite a bit and the "goodies" the scouts have are very nice. Especially the Expedition BattleDress. Boy, talk about a useful tool.

The summaries on Technologies around p110 are very nice.
