Heaven & Earth "path lost" bug

That is a definite program error.

You say you are trying to save "details".
What exactly are you saving and do you have an option of different formats to save to.

Usually this error is caused when there are duplicate variables defined in a program (causes a compile error). But I am thinking - maybe - the program is trying to pass a variable to an output routine and it is already showing as being there ready for output. This could be due to the program having different routines that are used for the various types of output formats. I haven't tried saving to various formats, I have only "saved" something once that I recall - I just pull up what I need on the fly when i need it.

If there is another output format option like txt vs html, choose one of the other options and try that.

I am guessing that this is one of the bugs (previously found or new) in the 1.8 Beta. If so then I don't know what to do since it would most likely require a code fix.

Of course if this isn't a result of the "usual problem", then it may be able to be worked around, but I don't have clue as to where to start.

It's time like these that I really wish H&E would have been allowed to go to open source after work ended on it.

The error comes everytime the program attempts to save system details. I load Spinward Marches hes files. I try to generate details for the entire sector or a subsector. As soon as the first world is generated, it begins "saving system details", then comes up with the error I described.

I just want to have the details for the Spinward Marches on hand, so I can then go fiddle with the maps, notes, etc to my liking. Can't generate the sector :( in detail.

[EDIT] Tell me what I'm doing wrong here:

I uninstall H&E. A few files are left after using Windows uninstall, so I delete those. I search the registry using 'heaven' and delete any files specifically for H&E.
I extract HE104 to a folder. I then run Setup from H&E, picking where to place the program (C:/Program Files/Heaven&Earth or something like that).
I launch the program once then close it. I've tried it without this step also.
I extract HE108 to a folder. There are just a few files. I copy and paste them into the H&E folder, so some of the 104 files are replaced.
I extract HES files to a folder within H&E. I've tried it without this step also.
I launch H&E again. I pick load sector. I choose Spinward Marches from the HES folder. Everything looks fine. I'm now getting the 'path not found' error.
I click on the map until I have chosen the world of Regina. World details takes a few seconds.
I want to keep the data for Regina, so I go to File>Save Details (or something like that). I get an error. Currently I'm getting only the 'Path not Found' error, not the original error I was complaining about.
I check over everything in readme, it seems fine (I note that some of the files are in windows/system32 instead of windows/system as stated in the readme).

[EDIT] After many attempts at clean installs (including removing registry entries), I'm getting the 'Path not Found" error also. I guess I'm going to have to use 1.04, I really wanted to fiddle with the maps though - can't place mountains in 1.04 :) When I get the 'Path not Found' errors, I can run the program, just can't save any details.

I followed what you did on my computer, step by step, and couldn't reproduce the error.

I then went back and changed the map output to T2300 style and tried to resave and got the path not found error.

I re loaded SM, picked another system , no error, changed map format, saved again - no error.

For some reason it looks like at random times the program decides it can't find the needed path. Why I haven't a clue. Sorry.

The only suggestions I can make is to copy those files (not move) that are suppsed to be in one directory over to the other. that way the program can find them no matter which location they are.

Also did you ever set a default File Directory in the Options drop down menu?
It may seem silly but that might correct or partially correct the path not found error.

I am really starting to think that this isn't a program bug. I mean, I have ran my copy of 1.08 on my Dell laptop, XP-SP2 now for some time, saving and adding notes and whatnot and have yet to encounter either of your errors (except for the one path not found today - which hasn't popped back up yet and I have saved a number of other systems since then in prepping for a game coming up in a few days.) Obviously the program is having an issue but I am really starting to think it is because of something else happening on your system - what I don't know.

But this kind of thing has happened to me with other VB based programs in the past. Program errors with no explanation when everyone else's copy ran fine. The one case in particular i recall the program never worked right until after my old hard disk died and I installed a new one with a fresh install of windows and all my other software.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. H&E is a great program. As I said earlier, I just wish it would have been made open source after Stuart stopped working on it. Then these little glitches could be worked out or at least diagnosed much easier.

I've been putting everything (including HES and 1.08 updates) into the H&E folder itself.

I get an exception error (with a note about path lost) and the program crashes when I do this

....I am really starting to think it is because of something else happening on your system - what I don't know.....

I will try it on my desktop and see what happens. Kinda hard to bring my desktop down to the gaming table though. :( Would prefer to use my laptop.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks for taking the time to try!

SUCCESS!

At least partially so. :)

I don't know why this helped, but I extracted everything from the zip files directly to the H&E 1.04 folder and my previous errors went away. Previously I had been copying and pasting from pre-extracted folders I had made since I was re-installing so often.

I've been trying to generate the Spinward Marches this morning, my current problem is that it hangs up at randomn worlds with a "go sub" error.

It's at randomn points, so I think I might try generating one subsector at a time, saving what is successful and retrying subsectors that hangup.

I have hope!

[EDIT]: May have spoken to soon. After generating (and saving!) several worlds only being interrupted by the occasional go sub error, the path lost error popped up. After a few more generations and saves (even with the path lost error message), I'm now back to getting the duplicate definition message and thus unable to save anything.

I'm going to try this on my desktop. If I can simply generate the Spinward Marches with all the data I need, perhaps I can then use my laptop to view the data created on my desktop.

jrmapes I noticed you are from SE Kansas. NE Kansas here. Gorilla fan? Or did I already ask you that?

Glad to hear that you got it to work - for the most part.

Ive never tried to do a whole sector or subsector save might have to try to just to see if the gosub error pops up.

Oh, yeah a Gorilla fan, kinda required - also a Gorilla Alum.

My nephew is currently a Gorilla. Oh, and if you get pulled over in that town, by an Officer Scott (I last heard he was a sergeant?), tell him you know a police officer named Cory that he used to work with up north. It might save ya a few credits or a trip to the Ministry of Justice. :)

[EDIT] As I had planned, I installed H&E 1.08 on my XP SP2 desktop (same OS as laptop). So far, everything is working fine with no errors. I currently plan to use my desktop to create and modify hes files, then send them to my laptop for display only during game sessions.

[EDIT2] After 64 systems generated and saved, same go sub error as on laptop. I then tried to generate only a subsector. After a few systems, go sub error again. Now the path lost error is popping up also. Same thing that was happening on my laptop is occuring on my desktop. It's not the computer. Others with XP have this problem? I even disabled anti-virus, and my two coms had different anti-virus software anyway. Could a memory leak be causing this problem? Perhaps I should re-install, then do one subsector at a time, re-booting between each. I'll get back to you later. :) Perhaps I should make a thread on how to generate and save a sector in H&E1.08 with an XP system when I get this to work.

I don't know who the heck the Gorilla's are but 3yrs of KU made it very clear to me that Jayhawks are the bomb.

Thanks for the offer... but with Universe in my possession, I'd rather just have everything in one place.

The errors I got were multiple. I remember the path not found, and then when saving system details the program would crash. Then it would work for a few more tries... then it would crash. I just about threw it out the window.

No... no H/E for me.

I'm using it on WinXP and have only had the path not found error one time - no problems dong anything since that one time.

I am still not convinced that there isn't a program you have running on both systems that may be causing the problems - however i've seen some pretty strange happenings on various computers with a single program. Some work some don't some do part time - it's sometimes unexplainable. Luckily my Dell laptop has been almost totally bullet proof with XP on it.

I have Universe to, absolutely love it. Only problem is you don't have it all in one place with Universe. Universe only does half of it. You can't generate the system details (Rice Papers) with Universe (yet). When Universe 2 comes out, it is supposed to incorporate that feature that currently only H&E can do. Having a Rice Paper printout sure saves a ton of prep time for games - all your encounters, trade and passenger info taken care of not to mention all the planetary details at your fingertips. Yup, It will be nice when Universe 2 arrives.

The Gorillas are Pittsburg State University - Pittsburg, KS.
They are Div II and also in the NAIA. They have one a number of Div II Championships in Football and are especially known too for their Track and Field-Cross Country accomplishments. Being Div II we obviously don't play KU or K-State in football. However we usually play KU in Basketball in non-conference play. Even came close to embarrassing them a few times.

Rock chauk chickenhawk....I won't say the rest. :) KSU grad here.

The reason that I went with H&E instead of Universe is the system and world maps. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but Universe doesn't provide these yet.

I currently have about half of the Spinward Marches generated, but with all of the errors it is a pain in the arse. When I'm done, hopefully I can go in and edit maps, details, etc without getting the errors.

I have also thought about using this site:http://www.utzig.com/cgi-bin/iai/map_sector.pl?FSectors=Spinward_Marches
It has everything I need except details on non-mainworlds and world maps. If I got permission to download it, I could use an html editor to add world maps of my own creation (possibly using the H&E editor) and details on other worlds and moons when needed.

I attended both KU and K-State as well as PSU over the years working on my studies. As much as Gorilla fan as I am - when it comes to the big boys, I consider myself a Wildcat through and through.

Purple Pride!

Universe doesn't provide those yet - why I have stayed with H&E in addition to Universe. Universe 2 is supposed to add those features.
