First of all, great forum. Traveller Baby! What can I say? Having tried running a couple of GURPS Traveller games, I'm fairly new to traveller. I fell in love with the character creation rules of the Classic Traveller and I want to try a couple of games. I have some questions for you. Thanks.

1) I was creating a Scout character with the Book 6: Scouts. Having served 3 terms, my character wants to leave the service. Will I roll for re-enlistment just to see if I'll be called for mandatory assignment?

2)Creating a character with the Mercenary rules, I came upon to this. Is the grav sub-selection for the vehicle skill just for grav tanks and apcs? Because there is a Air/Raft skill also which is used for grav vehicles.

3)Book 1 says Pilot skill -1 defaults to Ships's Boat. My character has Pilot 4 and Ship's Boat 1. Which skill will I use?

THANKS!

Hi. A Traveller from the Land of the Ottomans, wow!

1.) The rules say yes, so you should; unless you get mandatory reenlist, you can still muster out.

2.) The skill "Grav Vehicle" is used interchangably with Air/Raft for things like grav tanks and such.

3.) Use Ship's Boat.

1) You have to roll for mandatory assignment.
2) Sorry no expirience with that.
3) In the original CT rules Pilot skill could be used for ship's boat skill, minus 1. From the rules you fare better using Pilot. Maybe the ship's boat skill would be more apropriate for maneuvers that are exclusive to small vessels. Fighter combat and such. But that's upon the referee to decide wether to apply modifiers.

Or
3) when piloting a ships boat you could use your pilot skil at a -1 level
(Piloting skill is for star craft (ships which travel between stars systems ), ships boat is for space craft(ships which travel within a star system ))

One other thing to keep in mind: Scouts don't "retire". They evidently remain on reserve status until they die. If they receive a ship, they are also considered still in the Scouts.

<edit> Checked with my LBBs:

LBB1, 2ed., p. 26:

"The type S scout/courier is a 100-ton dispatch vessel of a type very common within human space...It is the policy of the scout service to make available such surplus scout ships to selected individuals on a reserve basis. The vessels are (hopefully) put to good use while they are not required in service, and both the ship and its pilot are available for recall to duty when needed." (My bold italics).

I interpret the word "selected" to mean those scout characters that muster out with a scout/courier.

LBB 6 specifically states that Scouts can't retire and don't get pensions. LBB 1 doesn't actually say this anywhere (AFAICS). LBB 6 just says that mustering out is carried out as per LBB 1.

MT Player's Manual states the "no retirement pay" rule clearly (p. 17, right hand column) but doesn't mention anything about the pension - presumably, this would be because Scouts can't retire and therefor aren't eligible for a pension.

GT: First In (p. 10) allows scouts that have left the scout service to have a ship and thus are considered to be on "detached duty" or to have "reserved status".

Anyhoo, this is how I interpret the above rules, by combining elements of LBB 1, LBB 6, MT and GT: F.I.:

Scouts can't retire;
Scouts don't get a pension;
Scout characters only get a scout/courier if one is rolled as a mustering out benefit;
Only scouts that get a scout/courier as a mustering out benefit are subject to recall to active service (and thus have "reserved status" or are on "detached duty");
Scouts that don't get a scout/courier as a mustering out benefit aren't liable to recalled to active service (and aren't considered to be on "detached duty" or to have "reserved status").

LBB 6, p. 5:

"The Detached Duty Office was created to keep track of all retired and detached Scout personnel in order to be able to swiftly recontact them and return them to active duty in an emergency. In addition, the detached Duty Office controls all surplus IISS craft (scout ships and courier vessels), making them available to some ex-Scouts if that will help the IISS in its missions. The office is two branches - Records and Intelligence.

The Records Branch maintains documentation on all Scouts serving on detached duty. Virtually all former Scouts fit this classification and are subject to recall for military service or for specific scout missions. Normally, however, only those Scouts with surplus scout vessels on loan to them are actively monitored." (My bold italics)

Again, I interpret the word "some" to mean those Scout characters that receive a scout/courier ship as a mustering out benefit.

LBB 6 actually includes "Detached Duty" (LBB 6, p. 12, "Scout Office Assignment" table) as part of the character generation process, just to confuse things further...
