hereditary knighthood

BwapTED

SOC-13
It's standard in Book 1.

Very German, which isn't surprising given the bit about the next rung up, barons, using 'von' with their surnames.

MT does knighthood more in the British fashion, doesn't it?

And there are hereditary baronetcies?

Or are there also hereditary knights of the Imperium alongside non-hereditary knights?

MgT's description of Baronets (MgT spinward marches book, page 26) makes clear that Baronets are technically a form of knighthood, and are explicitly hereditary. Page 25 also says "some orders(of knighthood) are hereditary, others not", so its really a case of whatever the GM wants at the time,

Their is also mention that some noble families give knighthoods to every adult member of the family who doesn't hold any other titles (ie non inheriting children, what the Aslan would call the Ihatei).

most of the MgT traveller line is non-OTU specific, but the spinward marches book is explicitly OTU, so its as close to a "canon" answer as Mongoose get.

Under T5, there are explicitly hereditary and non-hereditary knighthoods (Imperiallines #7 - Nobles). Hereditary Knighthoods tend to be those knighthoods that are Landed Knights assigned to the world, associated with representing the Imperium to the world's population as a kind of "ambassador", as opposed to merely honorific knighthoods.
