High Port design

MacTrom

SOC-14 1K
Ok, I did a search through the deck plan sticky, and saw several plans that could have answered this, but the pages don't exist anymore (??).

Has anyone done any serious plans/artwork for what would be a high teck High Port orbital station? I have the Revelation Station and the Vanguard Station from Future Armada. both of these are pretty neat, but very limited in actual function.

I'm thinking of something that can handle several dozen ships, casinos, hotels, shopping malls, ships into the kilo range.

I'm thinking of taking the Vanguard as a command module, adding maglev transit tubes to connect to several other large modules representing:
  • Casino
  • Hostel (TAS)
  • Hotel
  • Shopping (maybe 2 malls)
  • Cargo consignment
  • Ship Wright/Repair

Any suggestions or existing layouts, let me know.

Basic infrastructure would include power, sewage, water and air treatment, life support, communications (including internal, station wide, local short range flight control), supplies, maintenence, security, medical facilities, food preparation and distribution systems.

A separate command centers for flight ops, a "tower". A separate one for internal concerns, like security, maintenence, and engineering might be a good idea.

There was a really good adventure for the Alternity game that had plans for a big space station - The Lighthouse - it is available as a cheap pdf from rgpnow.

Argos III

Future Armada also has plans for a much larger station called the Argos III which might be worth checking out. The map book for it runs to 79 pages...

Thanks for the tips, keep them coming. I'll look at both of the stations at RPGNow. I was thinking along the lines of a dispursed structure (like the International Space Station) as that might be how one comes into being. Start by building the control tower, basic systems, etc, then commercialize it (casino) and further growth over time. Just stick hamster trails in betweeen with maglev "busses" to commute back and forth.

I'm working this weekend on a basic sketch (hopefully).

Argos III looks the best, and since the deck plans are modulised, I can use those to build my own variations. The Lighthouse didn't really satisfy me plan wise. I can't seem to print off the "Inner Cover" to have hard copy to review offline.

I'd like to see simple concept line-art for these deckplan elements:

* Generic Hospitality area (can serve as Casino, Hotel, Hostel, Hospital)
* Generic "Agora" (can serve as Casino, Shopping, Cargo consignment)
* Shipwright/Repair
* Maintenance (can serve as Life Support, Security, Comms)
* SPA Control Tower

I could then build these elements as pages to fit my "geomorphic" depot deck pages.

I am working on the modular plan for our orbital production Shipyard, and Haski Highport. This is for a B Class Starport at TL 14/pushing F.

Plans start for that after:

the Edit for the Blue Smoke,

A military Contract,

A yacht (The Lucky Starr)

The Starr and the Contract are being done simultaneous. The Contract is a lot bigger than the yacht. A lot of sub features like Tanks and APCs and Guns :)

I plan to take the line that the Starport modules I am designing, the on orbit ones, are the ones that we would be making for sale to the Imperium general. I also want to add a few more store modules chains like the Zippro's Vacc Suit outlet.

Now that I remember "2 squares per ton" I cant wait.

If you need to space yourself out, "Lucky" has no descernable need right now, whereas the military contract is very active.

I'm going to use the Argos for a stepping stone until I have more fleshed out for my dispursed station idea. Have you looked at the detail on it? I do hesitate on the habitation ring idea, but for now, it at least seems the more fully featured one.

Have you looked over the Argos? I just did a quick scan of it. When I have some more thoughts on the areas you mentioned, I'll send you a PM with my sketches.

Graphics

Anyone have an idea what software package is used to do the future armada series? This is pretty neat looking work.

Also, how does D20 Modern compare to T20 in deckplan scale?

They include pieces too, so one can build a custom layout using their wonderful graphics.

I've rarely seen mention of high ports in any Traveller literature. But I can assume that the high port reflects the downport. Which begs the question: what do they look like? I can imagine this Argos III acting as the high port for a class A, and I imagine that the Gateway station in Aliens and the Spacedock in the Star Trek movies would do the same.

Class E starports would have no high port, but what about classes D, C and B? Does anyone have movie references which might help with these? Perhaps the International Space Station (in futuristic finally-completed form) might do duty as a class D high port.

I'm running out of ideas for the rest ....
