I have a vague recollection of the an ever present running gag in the 2300 universe based around a fast food outlet known as a Food Extruder. Basically it spat out a non specific food, hence its nickname.

Was this ever official or am I dreaming this ?

It's official. It's the name of a chain of auto-vending machines and small, kiosk-sized restaurants. "Just say when!" is their motto. The machine can extrude the desired food, and corresponding bun, in any size from about 15cm to 200cm. Options include egg, taco meat, chicken, steak, hotdog. On Earth and Tirane, cultured meat substitutes are used.

I want the counter-top version for my home kitchen! Then all I need to keep in the fridge is drinks and condiments. Oh, and a stalk of celery so I can "eat healthy".

Pentapod Food Converter

The description of the Pentapod food converter (p.140-41 in Mongoose 2300AD core rules) describes it as a marketing disaster bc the Pentapods didn't consider human reaction to a creature that eats dextro-amino food and excretes levo-amino goop that is nutritious for humans.

Reading this, I had to wonder why some human marketing people didn't immediately make themselves a fortune by either: 1) buying these things and going into business on worlds with dextro biology, simply repackaging the end product into something more aesthetically pleasing, or 2) advise the Pentapods on changes to make for a second-generation of these that would either produce a nicer end product or else be simply tasty and edible itself - so instead of a processing device the new critter would be a kind of livestock that could consume dextro stuff but would itself be of levo biology tasty and nutritious to humans. Maybe these developments will be coming somewhere down the road?
