How do you handle psionics IYTU?

the Psionic Institute, officially sanctioned by the Terran Empire, a self-policing body with a code of conduct and much pomp and ritual.

Self-policing and self-regulating. Like journalists regulating their own standards. Like financial institutions operating within voluntary codes of conduct. Hmm. Good stuff I'm sure.

What could possibly go wrong with such a setup?

How do you handle psionics

The Commonwealth
Most people are neutral twards psionics .
With two notebal exceptions . Which are the following
Neo Avalon-(positive view)- the first settlers were Psis
Neo Carpathia-(negative view)-the world was controlled by a series of Psis tyrants.
Until the world was liberated by forces of the Old Empire.

The Collective
Uses a group of psis (the Though Police) to help keep the Collective's leaders in power .

The Cthulhi
All none Priest Cast psis are killed apon capture .

The Andromedaites
Are pro psionics .
There are different groups of psis as well . With the two notebal groups being the following

The Foundation-Teaches that with great power comes great responsibly.

The Order of The Black Rose-Psis supremacist terrorist group.

Absolutely nothing. The psis are very good at policing themselves. I know this. The voices in my head tell me this. The voices ... are very ... compelling ... about such ... I'm not supposed to be talking about this. Excuse me.

It really could, if there were enough people modified by psi surgery, be the perfect tyranny.

1984 with Telepaths to pick up the dissidents who slipped through the net.

Stalinist Russia with psis to find the dissenters and purge them into a gulag or worse in Siberia in winter.

The Cultural Revolution, where no-one could hide their thoughts about what was going on for long.

Oh, no, you don't purge them. You adjust them. Afterward, they're perfectly happy and compliant. It's really quite a comfortable procedure, barely noticeable.

That's how the Zhodani are depicted by most imperials, isn't it?

Excuse me Citizen, it appears your neural stapling is slipping, if you just step right in to this comfortable black grav/van we'll get you all sorted in no time...
>In the background you hear the familiar rattle and hiss of a can of Tranq being used...<

The number of telepaths and their actual abilities will make a great deal of difference here. If your telepath can read people's mind for a couple of minutes half a dozen times a day, most of the rooting out of dissenters will have to be through the oldfashioned methods, with the telepathic examination only the last confirmation.

And of course the exercise of your power depends on human beings. Is the telepath who gives someone a clean bill of health telling the truth? Read Paul Anderson's short story Sam Hall for some ideas on that score.
