Hull Colors

"I would think an active duty scout would be required to maintain a particular hull color. At least, that's the way it is going to be IMTU."

Really?

Since TRAV ships are small and land a lot the need for colors would be predicated on planetary ops. (Miltary Ops say Feri or Efate ) so undersides painted sky color and tops to match topography. Easy if operating on 1 world, difficult if many. Pure peacetime and Civvies would have own rules. Space needs no special color as electronics primary search method over incredible distances. Neon Green or Space Black have no affect on spotting.

Yeah, I love dazzle camo. And I suspect plenty of hours were put in by the bureaucracy discussing its use. And that's my point, I know governmental bureaucracies, and they like "official" stuff. Someone who is really keen on order is going to say, "all ships in sector Y are going to wear dayglo orange by order of the high command." Sure it will change over the centuries, and things will get really complex depending oh how byzantine YTU is, etc.

As for PCs, hey, the skies are the limit! Pink, whatever.

I'm thinking:

Partridge Family bus!

edit: I just got the image of the cutter... ew!

What's worse is that I can only imagine what the cutter's dock was painted like.

Although there's historical precedent of a sort...in Vietnam there were a pair of infamous (?) F-105's painted in a suggestive way: Cherry Girl and Pussy Galore I&II (#I was painted over by order then #II was repainted when the order was reversed). Both were painted in away to especially amuse the tanker crews.

Here's a decal set for one of them with a photo on the cover of the plane in flight for those without good imaginations: http://www.zotzdecals.com/reviews/zotz72010/zotz72010.htm

Doh!
Yeah, that didn't click in my mind.
Suffice to say, hey... real life people do paint things in suggestive ways, as evidenced by the above.

That's perfectly plausible, of course. But on the other hand, why shouldn't they be allowed to customize their ships? What vital Scout interest would be harmed?

Hans

Its a government bureaucracy. Therefore it will have rules. Another reason is public relations. A standard paint scheme or set of schemes makes the ISSS recognizable to the public. And even with electronic identification and detection you still don't know what the object physically looks like until you are in visual ranges. Otherwise no-one would paint a ship any other color than red :D

The Praxis...

Walter Jon Williams' Trilogy has Noble Type Guys (Think Magnus), who, as a matter of honor paint/decorate/outfit their vessels in all manner of ways - interior *AND* exterior.... so, for TUs.... the flagship... or whichever gets the DUDE (DUDETTE) on it... gets all SHINY... and the other ships get outfitted to match... kinda special like.

I really like the idea... don't much play the Noble Navy types... prefer the gritty (grimy?) and resourceful Scouts.... sometimes with a PINK courier (at the last way station when you mustered out... Scout #1123 needed a new paint job, but all they had was red and white... but not enough of either for the whole ship!) Ah.... a misspent youth with Saturday Classic Movies.....

ANYWAY, back to my beginning thought (I'd say original, but that's another story...) - check out the series, pay special attention to the Captains and see if it doesn't have place in YOUR universe.... I changed mine.

There's even a unique way to look at (through the eyes of?) the Ine Givar, too - start a post if you find it... it should be a fun discussion.

Would I be the Magnus in question?

And as a Navy to Noble, I want it look nice and be able to fight. :)

I too remember the pink vessel.

Yes... You *ARE* the Magnus under discussion... while I did not especially care for some of the BEHAVIOR of the Noble/Navy/Captains... I did enjoy their style... and thought that would fit you to a T.... especially considering your Blue Smoke and other ship designs...

If you're going to make an entrance... make it memorable, and STYLISH!

;)

I resemble that remark, sir.

OK. Just curious. Ego and all. *shrugs* Still new to all this popularity. Funny they mention it in the MTRM, but still.

As for the Blue Smoke, that is not merely my effort, I most did the customer thing and asked for the patently impossible and my most excellent Starwright Saarthuran did the rest (though some day I will get him do me an external view of her. Plans are cool, very cool in fact, I just need to see her skin...I mean hull.)

As for the possibility that you are also thinking of the Herald, well that sir is the domain if the Count, not I. ;)
