IBIS: Profit and Peril

I was going through some old Traveller stuff and found a photocopy from the March, 1980 issue of the Dragon Magazine.

The article was about a new character class called the IBIS or Interstellar Bureau of Internal Security. It included all the necessary forms and charts to create an IBIS character.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone here remembered the article or played characters who were from the IBIS?

And was the IBIS ever expounded upon by later Traveller material?

Well, I hope this stirs memories for a few of you...and sends others digging through the old Dragon pile. :D

Not IBIS, but I do remember 'Skitterbuggers' from Dragon back in 1982. Probably a subclass of the Scout career. Slang for IGS team members involved in geophysical research.

I seem to recall that the IBIS characters were quite a bit more skilled and powerful than characters generated by the advanced character generation found in LBB's 4-7. But it's been a long time since I've seen the article (I have that Dragon magazine somewhere in my RPG stuff.)

Thanks for the site. And yes the characters did start with better skills and mustered out with more cash and better equipment.

I'll make a scan of my copy and offer it up for email if anyone shows any interest.

IBIS was created as an Imperial counterweight to the terrorism caused/ sponsored by SORAG, that much I recall. The SORAG booklet iirc, was published under another pubication company, much like Judges Guild's stuff "for use with Traveller."

I recall playing a member of IBIS, and trying to stop a SORAG terrorist group linked with the Ine Givar, or so the tale spun by our Gm led us to...

Oh...I remember these guys.
I rolled up several to use as NPCs in MTU, and they all turned out with 20-30 skills/levels!
A couple of my players wanted to use these guys as pc's. (argument ensues). I finally relented, and forced the pc's to undergo 'detraining'.
At mustering out, roll 1d6 per term of service.
Add numbers together, equals number of skills/levels 'detrained' from the individual.
I was brutal, but what 'sane' government is going to let someone who knows 50 ways to kill with a spork, loose on the streets, especially someone with nada for social skills. (Remember all that training you got? Where do you think the time came from?)
It actually made the PC's somewhat manageable.
