Idea for a traveller scenario, can't seem to get past initial concept.

Grimes

When is Grimes not getting in trouble?

After all the author's ship shot down a German bomber, then followed up by shooting down British fighter.

In A.B.Chandler's book Far Traveller, a collection of John Grimes shorts, he is a captain of a rich lady's yacht. They find a colony seemingly abandoned. The yacht, BTW, is sentient, and searches around and finds the colonists. When Grimes, the lady, and a party of robots get there, they discover the colonists all in a cave acting drunk. Cutting it short, the moss lining the cave provides all nutritional needs plus an intoxicant. The colonists have basically turned into vegetables, only eating the moss and having sex and sleeping.

The crisis for Grimes is that he falls into the trap of the moss, and it takes the lady quite some time and ingenuity to get him free of it.

Decent story, like most of the Grimes stories. Could fit easily into Traveller.

Most Grimes stories involve intricate detail concerning shipboard life, getting alone with a woman, who usually ends up nude and having sex with her.

Okay I'm exaggerating, they're pretty good stories, but it's sorta like James Bond in space without the extra-dose of excitement and danger.

Wasn't that the story that ends up him leaving and his getting the made of gold little shuttle ? Which he turns into a courier service before it goes under.

I always like the story about the Survey Service visiting El Dorado (I think it's been a while) and them using the old "rocket boat" which I took to mean a reaction drive version of a 30-ton ship's boat in the TU. Then them crashing it in the lake and sinking it and them performing salvage on it. The nude waterskiing duchess (or noblewoman) who caused the crash and the robotic game on the planet.

The stories about the planet Eblis were interesting, with their horned alien locals. I remember thinking about Traveller's own Ordear by Eshaar at least in general terms while reading that one.

Boy it's been a few years since I read them and have forgotten a great deal.

I seem to remember Kinsolving and the tesseract which teleported them to a pocket universe or alternate dimension. Dominic Flandry shows up in one story where there's some sort of dimensional transfer.

The Survey Service and their psionic comm officers remind me a great deal of the Kzin Telepaths from Larry Niven's fine stories.

I'll have to pull those out and re-read them. Maybe Prime Vector (star wars uni) too.
