I'm seeking comments and suggestions.

CUT TO:

INT. NIGHT - OFFICER FAMILY QUARTERS

In the living room Dennis opens the front door and lets
Grace into the apartment. She is wearing earth-toned
civilian travel clothes.

GRACE

Are you ready?

DENNIS

Yes.

Dennis senses something. He turns to find that his Mother
has entered the room in her wheelchair. There is a small
watch case in her left hand.

Dennis now has to go into full gentleman mode.

DENNIS

Mother, this is First Lieutenant Grace
Holland of the Imperial Marine Corps.

Lieutenant, this is my mother, Baroness
Jacquelyn Aella Sterling, Commander,
Imperial Navy Reserve.

Grace nods.

GRACE

I am honored to meet you My Lady.

Grace hears the mentally transmitted (M.T.) voice of Mother
in her head.

MOTHER (M.T.)

I have heard so much about you.

From a rather biased source.

Dennis is a bit embarrassed at this point.

DENNIS

Well, yes.

I'm sure we could dig up a Zhodani file
on Grace if you really want to see an
alternative point of view.

Mother smiles.

MOTHER (M.T.)

Dennis, I want you to take this.

She opens the small watch case to reveal a little boy's
ROGER RANGER wristwatch.

Grace recognizes it as the watch Dennis was carrying in her
future vision.

CUT TO:

EXT. DAY - INDUSTRIAL RUINS

It is raining hard. Dennis is walking away from the point of
view. We see a close up of a small boy's wristwatch in his
left hand.

CUT TO:

INT. NIGHT - OFFICER FAMILY QUARTERS

Dennis is reluctant.

DENNIS

Mother, I can't.

MOTHER (M.T.)

You will need this. Please take it.

Dennis realizes that he is not going to win this argument.
He kneels down before Mother. She closes the watch case and
places it in his left hand.

Dennis leans forward and kisses her right hand.

CUT TO:

EXT. NIGHT - ROOFTOP VEHICLE LANDING PAD

Dennis and Grace load his luggage onto an Air/Raft, an
antigravity version of a jeep, this is parked on the landing
pad. Andrea is in the pilot's seat. After Dennis and Grace
have boarded the air/raft it lifts off and flies toward the
ship landing pad area of the naval base.

Comments:

1) The use of a wealthy wheelchair-bound telepath as a means to an end is somewhat less than original.

2) The watch is more interesting than any of the characters. It could have just as easily been delivered by messenger, or found in a piece of luggage.

3) The characters so far are one-dimensional. You have a disabled matriarch, her son, and his fiancé. Everything else is set dressing.

4) Nothing happened to establish conflict or character motivations.

Here's a recap:

"Let's go! Oh ... hi mom! Meet Grace. Grace, meet my mother, Madame Xaviera Plotte-DeVice."

"Nice to meet you"

"Nice to meet you"

"Here's a ROGER RANGER wrist watch."

"Thanks mom, bye!"

"Bye!"

"Bye!"

And the air/raft takes off.

And it wasn't even a dark and stormy night... ;)

Or was it?

Ouch! Rekobah! I'm not sure with the very brief bit we've been given to read the characters could be fleshed out to any great degree.

I don't know where the story is going, but the hook grabbed me, insofar as I could see it playing like a film in my head.

Ravs

I was fairly certain that I was asking for an opinion on Imperial ettiquette.

For the record that's about page 45 through 47 in the screenplay project. My target length was about 90 pages but the way things are going something between 100 and 120 pages is more likely.

My lack of God! Do I have to post every (bleeping) page of the script in the forum?

Perhaps I should just summarize.

And the Marine Lieutenant is NOT a fiancee.

Okay ... I was too rough. My bad.

Now, if only I could view the "whole text" without having to join another group or be confronted with the following message:

"You cannot view the group's content or participate in the group because you are not currently a member. Membership is invite only.

The correct form of address for a Marine Lieutenant in the UK addressing a Naval Commander is Sir or Ma'am regardless of noble rank. :D

Here's what I'd do, right off, with what you've given above.

FADE IN:

INT. NIGHT - LIVING ROOM
MOTHER sits in a WHEELCHAIR, holding a WATCH CASE. GRACE, wearing an Imperial Marine Corps UNIFORM, Stands near DENNIS.

DENNIS
Grace, this is my mother, Jacquelyn Aella Sterling.

GRACE
I am honored, Baroness.

MOTHER (V.O. - Telepathy)
(looks at GRACE Intently, lips unmoving)

Dennis has told me much, Lieutenant Holland.

DENNIS
Zhodani Intelligence would tell a different version.

MOTHER (V.O. - Telepathy)
(smiles)
Dennis, take this.

Mother opens the WATCH CASE to reveal a BOY'S WATCH.

Grace looks at the watch, with a nod of recognition.

PUSH IN AND MATCH CUT TO:

EXT. DAY - INDUSTRIAL RUINS - CLOSE ON WATCH
RAIN DROPS spatter the face of a BOY's WATCH in a masculine hand. He closes his fist.

PULL BACK to REVEAL
Dennis walking away, in the RAIN.

INT. NIGHT - LIVING ROOM

DENNIS
Mother, I can't.

MOTHER (M.T.)
You will need this.
(beat)
Please.

Dennis kneels before Mother, as Grace observes.

Mother closes the watch case, and gives it to him.

Dennis leans forward and kisses her right hand.

FADE TO:

EXT. NIGHT - AIR/RAFT COCKPIT - IN FLIGHT
Andrea is in the PILOT'S SEAT.
Dennis and Grace sit behind her in PASSENGER SEATS.

ANDREA
We're cleared to land at the Naval Star Base.

Ah, I'll rest a bit and download what you have on that google site.

As I understand your question, and that from your second post this is in screenplay format, not as a story per se:

The nod to the Lady (the Baroness) in the wheelchair is the least obesiance done to a titled personage and flag ranked officer*;

The address form of ma'am hails to her Naval reserve rank.

The address to her title would be excellency for Being a Baroness.

The son's full obesiance, the kissing of the ring bearing hand is traditional, dating back to the seal of office ringbearer of the Low Middle ages Feudal Nobility and the Prelacy of the Catholic Church in same era. It is High court full acceptance/ and answer to the bearer.

*Any rank of below LTCDR/ O-5 rank, is below "Flag rank", in anyone's Navy, wet or Space.

Not as an echoey voice over, at least. Maybe clever subtitles, a la Nightwatch or Heroes.

You can also infer the content of a telepathic message from the reply. You needn't make mother's lines apparent to the audience.

Think of that cool scene in "Point Blank" when Walker (Lee Marvin) confronts his wife. In the script, Walker questioned his wife, but when they filmed it, Lee Marvin just sat there while Sharon Acker ansered the silence. Very effective.

I thought that flag rank starts at Rear Admiral and goes up from there. Commanders and Captains do not fly there own flag.
Right?

oh, come on, didn't you just L-O-V-E:

"Arrakis, Dune the desert planet" whispered over and over...

(I know that wasn't psionics...)

that's one story where so much thought (and minutae) on behalf of the characters killed the translations to movies.

The address to her title would be excellency for Being a Baroness.
Is this canon from GURPS nobles or something. In real life "excellency" is used for Ambassadors, Religious Leaders of Cardinal Rank, Viceroys/Governor Generals and Presidents of certain nations. It was also the traditional form of address for a State Governor in the USA tough that appears to have lapsed.

In regards to a Baron or Baroness, it is proper to begin an address with My Lord or Dear Lady. If the conversation continues the Baroness will be addressed as Madame (not Ma'am) whilst you should continue with My Lord (definitely not mi'lud) for the Baron. Interesting to note that these forms continue from the Lord Lyon's College in Scotland as Baron is merely a courtesy title in England & Wales but has true noble ranking in Scotland.

In the UK the flag officers start at Commodore (NATO equivalence OF-6 which is lower grade rear admiral in the USN).
