Imperial Marine Question

Drakon

SOC-14 1K
Well, 2 questions actually.
1) What Marine units fought in the Jewell sector during the 4th Frontier War? I am constructing a Vargr Marine character's backstory and need to know his unit.
2) How do you say "Bad Dog" in Vilani?

There isn't a whole lot about the Fourth Frontier War, unlike the Fifth.

The Fourth was a lot of commerce raiding and ship actions, so he might have been shipboard the whole time.

But here's the url to the Traveller Wiki entry:

For the phrase in Vilani, you could use the language generation tables in the MT Referee's Companion. Roll d6 for the number of syllables in each word....

It occurs to me that Vilani may not have a word for 'dog' if there were none on Vland. Remember that 'Vargr' is derived from a Scandinavian word for 'wolf', so it would seem the popular name came from Terrans.

The Wiki notes that the Vilani called them urbarrani ("pack-predator barbarians"). You could use this, or a slang word made from that. The Vargr might take the 'barbarian' part as an insult. Or you could make up a name for some other animal known to the Vilani, which may make a good backstory.

That was one of the many things that turned me off on MegaTraveller. Rolling dice to create a language.

I'm fairly sure that they were just reprints of the tables from the CT Alien modules all conveniently gathered in one place.

If you didn't care for MT, fair enough. But if you don't want to roll dice to find the number of syllables in a word, you could decide that yourself first - I promise I won't tell the Zhodani Fun Police.

As others have been saying, not much canon information about the 4th Frontier War. You could make the (not unreasonable) assumption that Imperial Marine units stationed in the Marches were the same as those in the 5th Frontier War a few years later.

In that case you could choose from the 1931 Regt, the 2091 Regt, the 5722 Regt, the 8327 Regt, the 1071 Regt, the 8041 Regt, the 3277 Regt, the 6127 Regt.

So 1931, 2091, 5722, 8327, 1071, 8041, 3277, and 6127 regiments.. thank you. I can come up with the subordinate units, (battalion, company, etc. from there)

Being Marines, they might not be all that offended being called "barbarians" :)

The reason for the "Bad Dog" thing, is that my character wanted to open a bar and was going to call it "Mal Canum" which is bad latin for Bad Dog.
