Is MgT2e Backwards Compatible?

Frewfrux

SOC-12
I've been tossing around the idea of "getting into" MgT2e for a bit and was wondering...is the new version (2e) compatible with the old version? Can I, for example, use older publications with the 2e version easily/seamlessly?

Depends what you mean by the old system so let's answer it for all Traveller.

CT, MT, T4, T5, easily

GT not really at the system level, except the UWP are the same and 90% is non system specific, so in many ways - easily
T20, well not systematically, however see GT
TNE, ditto
HERO Traveller - no idea

MgT1e, pretty much very easy - a few skills and rules change but they can be ignored. Ships and vehicles were designed differently but like CT, T4, MT, T4, T5 - they work at a top level much the same.

Sorry, yes, I meant compatible with MdT1e. For example, if I bought a MgT1e book and the MgT2e core rules, would they play together nicely?

From the sounds of what you said, it sounds like they should as long as I'm not heavy on designing any new spaceships with the old rules to use with the new.

Yes, this is true.

Ship design is different, but close.
Character gen is very close, but due to a different skill list... convert on the fly.
It's "ratings compatible" and/or "convertible on the fly" in most areas. Some areas are fully compatible.

Don't forget that MgT2e+ is supposed to be compatible with Classic Traveller. You can use all of the books, supplements, and adventures from Classic with MgT2e+. Or you are supposed to be able to. It looks pretty easy to bring things over when I looked at it.

For TNE equipment, it used a different combat engine and scale, so not readily convertible - you'd have to do stats based on educated guesswork, or re-design from scratch.

However, for characters it's fairly easy to get a workable conversion - add one to each TNE stat, drop Charisma or use it to inform some social skill purchases, then take the TNE skills, convert them to the nearest MgT2 equivalent, and halve them (except Medical - you'll want to divide that by three, because any TNE character with an MD will have Medical-8 or higher). This won't necessarily match what you'd get from MgT2 chargen, but should be 'good enough'.

As has been previously stated, yes, it's very easy to use MgT1e publications with MgT2e. Which also means it's very easy to use most Cepheus Engine publications as well.
