Judges Guild Mercenary Cruiser Reimagined

Still moving along...

The pirate paint scheme is just about finished. I still need the interior of the cargo bays, hull plating on the aft section, and a bunch of other minor things. But, it's starting to shape up. Texturing on this has been kind of a grind; it turned out to be a lot more work than I wanted, but the way it's set up the other texture schemes should be quite a bit easier.

Oh, animated textures are definitely doable...I just need to figure out how to do them so they look worth a damn. I've even got some ideas for some videos down the road a bit.:D

Merry Christmas, everybody

With the holiday in full swing, I haven't accomplished much, but I did start on the civillian texture and a short flyaround video of the Type C. It's pretty rough, but thought you might like a peek.

All this modeling of yours is making me think about re-modeling parts of my Azhanti High Lightning. Ain't modeling fun?!

I still have a boatload of stuff to texture (most notably the pinnace, atv, and air/raft), but I finally got a basic civillian texture finished. I went with the window glow because the bridge and other interiors are still pretty early in the process, and it's an easy (if kind of lame) way to cover it up.

Anyway, I've started doing some test renders with really simple lighting. The results are posted below.

The starfield background used in these are my first serious effort at a hand-made background. The planet and star are lunarcell and solarcell. I think at this point I'm going to hold off texturing the 3 vehicles, mostly because I'm getting a little burned out on texture for the moment, and spend some time roughing out some other projects and finishing the interior stuff. Eventually, I'll get this one finished; when I do, I'm going to put together a full PDF with the renders, deckplans, etc. I may try to do the same at some point with the X-boat service hull.

I can't wait to see what the final renders look like.

And if this is your first serious effort at producing background images, I can't imagine what you'll be able to do after some practice.

I fully second what both Andrew and Major B said.

Also, I don't know if it's just me, but I think the glow around the drives could stand with being turned down a bit also.

When I can finally afford some 3d software I know whom I want too had to my list to bug about help ;).

Agreed entirely. Nice work!
And only on a 'first try'?
Disgusting... ;)

Recommendations noted and implemented, many thanks. Can't believe I didn't notice the damn shadows weren't turned on. Many thanks for all of the support and compliments - you guys are too kind.

As far as the backgrounds go, a good tutorial is worth about a hundred attempts to muddle through it. I used these from Design Shard (nods to Scarecrow for the original post that led me there) - Space background tutorials. I've learned more about photoshop from these tutorials than I knew to begin with.

And with regards to assistance to beginners, I'm always up to share what I've learned. It's only through the kindness of others' advice and tutorials that I've been able to learn as much as I have, and I'm a firm believer in paying it forward.

This project has become like a scab you can't leave alone. I'm still picking at it, going back to do some more work on the pinnace, playing with special effects, and just general tinkering.

Here's a sample of an explosion I've been working on the last couple of days to learn how atmospherics and particles work.

Noooooooooooo!

You didn't blow up the Hippity! Not when it's one of the features in the January 2011 Freelance Traveller!

You've done a fantastic job on this; consider turning this into another article for Freelance Traveller!

Finally finished a basic texture on the pinnaces. The ATV and Air/Raft are on hold for the moment, but I'll get them finished up eventually. I'm working up a few renders of each version, then start on a merchant ship of some kind - they've got to have something to chase.
