Just had to get this off my chest....

(deep breath)

YAAAAAAANKS IIIIIIN SPAAAAAAAAACE!

(deep sigh)

I've got an article all set up for submission to JTAS about the development of grav vehicles and air traffic control, but I'm sure it would be bounced in a nanosecond by Loren. Why? Yanks In Space.

In the article, I detail the evolution of ATC in the pre-starflight era of Terra, and how the development of gravitics changes how Terrans use airspace, up to the limits of atmosphere. The most realistic modeling of such ATC could not fail to be a descendant of the modern US civilian/military ATC system. And there's the rub.

The roar from the non-American Traveller fans would cause the New Madrid and San Andreas Faults to cut loose, even though the metric system is referenced throughout. How dare I suggest the 3I's system of ATC is descended from us ugly 'Mericans?! Chris Thrash has stated before that he has had to be extremely careful of even the *perception* of "Yanks In Space". Oh, well.

Wally.

Speaking as an American who lives VERY NEAR the San Andrea's fault, all I can say is big deal. If you're a Fin, Brit, German, Brazilian, Aussie, Indian, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Inuit, or even a Martian, write your thing and see how it flies. If the material is good, then it will be accepted.

On the note of class, there seems to be a stronger notion of class within Europe, and sometimes I believe this leads to a perception that Americans are offended by the same stigmas, slights, and other social attachments that pervade European society. This is not the case. We have a sense of pride, but do not begrudge the honest success and accomplishments of others. True, we frown upon success where the willfull sacrifice of lives and values were made, and have our own moments of jealousy, but as a whole we welcome progress, regardless of who made the achievement. Anyone can come here and become an American; not so of other nations.

Simple solution, do some research and find out about the european air trafic control system. It probably deals with as great of greater density of air trafic than anywhere else in the world.

To blue ghost, re your last paragraph, tell that to the Mexecans who get deported back to Mexeco.

Anyone can come to America, legally....just as anywhere else: follow the rules.
But...this is a Traveller board and NOT the 'Pride in my country' board. So, before we descend into nationalistic bickering and wreck this whole thing up, let's get back to Traveller. As for 'Yanks in Space' articles- I agree with above -submit and see. those who do not try, will automatically fail.

Gats'

The point of my second paragraph was to explain to PinkSplice why he need not fear creating science-fiction not emmersed in Americana. It was not meant to open a debate. I'm not the administrator of this board, but I think this an inappropiate venue to debate U.S. immigration policy. As to your adhominen attack; go get stuffed

On with the Traveller discussion....

ATC is probably ( or rather, hopefully ) standardized internationally anyway, so i wouldn´t use any sleep about that either...

International air trafic control is, to a large degree, standardised, the point I was making was, if the system you have come up with, bassed on the US ATC, is basicly the same as that used in european air space, then it is probably that which is used over most of the world, is well tested and would be what you are looking for.

On the subject of air trafic control and automobile traffic moving into the air in grav cars, have you people watched the Fifth Element, makes you wonder if wide spread grav vehicle use in urban areas is such a good idea.

Yanks in Space - I thought they already were!!! Is this political correctness gone mad?

As someone from England, I don't get offended by taking contemporary USA structures and transposing them to sci-fi - its more likely to be the case anyway given the US's domination of technology (although I think that the future space generations are more likely to play what you call soccer than what you call football).

As someone who feels warm when I see the St. George Cross at a football match (!), I feel did get slightly offended when Twilight 2000 did the UK source book and filled it with unrealistic stereotypical stuff like Royalists and football hooligans, but I don't see any problem in transposing US technology or culture to a far future setting.

Because I'm an American, this may shock you... but I most certainly hope that you are right!

Rather than bitch about it, why don't you try submitting it and see what happens. Then if he doesn't use it, you would actually have something valid to complain about (assuming, as I'm sure we all do, that your article is a marvel of style and content and that there are no other valid reasons to reject it but the blind, unreasoning hatred of Yanks in Space that all of us Europeans suffer from).
