[Looking For] More Expanded Career Generation

Hola,

I finally managed to get my hands on Books 1-8 after a 18yr absence. Been going over the supplemental rules for Navy/Military/Scout and Merchants and really like them. They fixed my main issue with Traveller (the low proliferation of skills) and I WANT MORE.

I've noticed a number of webpages have mentioned Criminal, Diplomat, Law Enforcement etc as additional Careers.

Are these from JTAS, books or homebrews? If they are published, where and do they follow the same format as the expansions as the above Careers (notably the per year assignment and acquisition of skills).

Thanks!

Yes, they are homebrews. And you can find several around here. First, go searching for any recent post by Golan2072 (who used to be employee 2-4601) - his sig has some expanded chargen in it. Also, this thread has some interesting bits in it.

Also, you can go to Freelance Traveller for some expanded chargen (especially Law Enforcement, at which I had a go, here, and which Golan critiqued in the thread above).

Enjoy! :D

Thanks FB, I rather liked the Netforcer and Treasury categories from my brief skim. Downloading as I type.

Now, that one (Espionage) was done in an old TAS or CHallenger, I believe. I think it centered on the Imperial Intelligence Service. Anyone have a better memory than me about this?

JTAS 19 has the character generation for Starport Authority characters. And searching through the starport section on this site yields several people with home-brewed character generation systems, including athletes, entertainers. The fun is in the search.

Back when I was playing, I picked up Adventure Gaming (Dec 1981) which has RIPs (Rebels, Insurgents and Partisians, a variant for anti-establishment types); Paranoia Press' Sorag (Zhodani intelligence/counter intelligence) and their Scouts and Assassins (explains itself). Never actually got around to playing/refereeing those :(

Essential Intelligence Agency (EIA).

I hope so! I'd hate to be in the process of reinventing something that has already been published, as I'm currently sifting through my notes and putting them into a short article (pages < 24) on Cleon I's "Agency of Essential Intelligence" to be posted in "House Rules" ... say, in a week to 10 days from this post.

Here I am - and you are welcome to use any of the materials in my sig or my threads :)

Thank you kindly! I'm playing with the actual system used but it adapts easily to the existing tables. I'm just adding a few skills and resetting some parameters on Cascade skills. Figured it would be nice to give players a bit more options than the five services.

Goodness everywhere!

You might be thinking of IRIS from Challenge 34.
Yup! That would be the one. :)

Yes, you can still find those on eBay and such. And, they are almost universally praised for their quality.

I knew I could get him to come on in. :smirk: (Golan, would you take a look at my homebrew and give it a once over? I would appreciate your input.)

The more I research this topic, the more I'm impressed with SJG's "Special Ops" supplement for GURPS. Just ignore most or all of the references to military operations, and you have a near-perfect resource manual for running espionage in a Traveller environment.

Most of my own notes are now redundant and irrelevant. Bummer.

I came up with an expanded pirate generation table, which I posted on my website (www.darkhstarr.com). I did some other character gen stuff, but the pirate & the cybertank generation (had players who wanted to play Bolos) are the only one I'm happy with.

Thanks. I also felt the need to add some Merchant skills to be well rounded.. It can be pretty easy to take a ship and/or cargo; and elude the authorities. It's another thing to current your booty into cash. I figured efficient pirates have some business sense unless they are part of an organization or take jobs from syndicates.

Didn't Dragon also do an expanded Chargen for Interstellar Spies. One could always the one Dragon did for Rogues of the Galaxy, as there is a very fine line between the classic intelligence operative (ie Bond) and a rogue. In terms of others there is one for Journalist, Scientist out there. Not to mention some of the more esoteric careers in CT like SolSec in the Alien Modules.

Years ago we even played around with a Boy Scout "pre-gen" as a way to do background skills like AD2300. IIRC, 2 merit badges for a skill translated to skill level 0, while an additional 4 more translated to level 1. Don't remember a lot more detail. I had an unemployed friend who had lots of free time to tweek things back then before he decided to go back into the military.

Looked at it and enjoyed your concept. Nicely done.
