Marc Miller Biography

I like to think of Marc as the Neil Armstrong of Traveller - he's the great hero, but avoids publicity. Loren is Buzz Aldrin - you can't avoid the guy! Frank Chadwick and/or John Harshman would be Michael Collins - the one everybody forgets :)

I like that comparison. Oddly apt as my son picked Neil Armstrong as his American hero for a 2nd grade project. With no coaching/hinting from me. Sometimes it is the forgotten ones that need to be celebrated as well: without them, we wouldn't have the front line people (the whole on the shoulders of giants can also be on the shoulders of the others who helped out but don't get the recognition they deserve)

Michael who?

He definately does not seek out attention for himself. He was at Winter War in Champaign this year, running a vender table. No FFE sign, and he didn't even have his name on his nametag. I didn't even realize it was him until after chatting with him for a few minutes.

Hey -- there WERE signs for all the dealers.

And you had to notice the Marc Miller, Ken Burnside, and myself discussions... with occasional stops by Kevin Walsh of Traveller HERO.

Now if only I could get some Traveller PLAYERS at Winter War.

I've said it before: It would be great if he did a Q&A thread with the fans here on CotI, in the manner Gygax, Mentzer, etc. etc. did on Dragonsfoot.

OK, I'll bite. Can you post a link to a good example of what they did and I'll go ask Marc about it?

(and I've been trying to keep him on the T5 errata all week... Sigh)

I'm sure there was a sign, but Mr. Miller chose not to display it (at least prominently by the time I got there). The only point I was trying to make was that he seems to not want to advertise his presense. Since I'd never met him before, and the only pictures of him I remember seeing were with a rather thick beard from about 25 years ago, I had no idea what he looks like today.

I didn't want to leave the impression that he was stand-offish, just that he doesn't bring attention to himself. He was very easy to talk to, he just didn't talk about who he was until I did.

BTW, Winter War really is a gem of a convention. Anyone within driving distance of Champaign IL should try to make it every year.

I would've, but my ex-wife was slow in getting her tax info to me so I could file it; I was planning to go if I had the cash. And I'm in Denver!

not sure if this was listed but there's an interview in High Passage #2 that goes over how he got started in gaming, GDW and a few things (I think it's #2 - the Cobra Conspiracy issue at any rate)

edit: issue 2, and continued in issue 3.

What is this Winter War of which you speak?

Somebody over on Dragonsfoot has proposed starting a new SciFi RPG ezine (last proposed title: DARKMATTER). Perhaps this is a good place to ask Mr. Miller if he'd like to do a brand spankin' new interview for us fans! :D

Hey! I'm not having to shill for my own convention! :p

(I'm the convention chairman at Winter War...)

And if anyone wants to run Traveller events at next year's Winter War, remember, January 29-31, 2010
