MGT Only: MgT2 Determining Difficulty?

Spinward Scout

SOC-14 5K
Baron
Does anyone know a good way to determine Difficulty when making a Task on the fly?

Do you start with Average and shift up or down?

And how do you determine Average Difficulty to begin with?

Making up target numbers when you can't decide:

Roll 3d - take either the highest two dice for the difficulty or the lowest two dice .

If you don't like the number roll again.

For a more difficult task roll 4d and drop the lowest or highest.

There not much use in rolling dice for a task that is below Average; most MgT characters will have an applicable skill and stat bonus so there’s not a lot of drama to the roll.

So you could try 1D+7 if you can‘t decide.

Or let the narrative the guide you. Is this something the character should reasonably be able to do? Average task. Not really equipped or prepared for this task? Difficult. And so on.

I figure based upon "How hard should it be for Joe Normal (777777 skill 1)?" I don't fiugure the PC into it at all; that's what the rest of the task system is for.

Or, how hard do you want it to be? It's a balance of narrative, railroading, and having the scenario go off the rails when the party triple crit catastrophic failures the elevator call and plummets to the bottom of the shaft, paralyzing 2 of them.

Brutal. And I thought I was a hard ass ;)

And you thought character generation was over?
