Moltke Class Cruiser

madmike

SOC-12
A recently completed capital ship design for my upcoming Mongoose Traveller campaign set within Gypsy Knights superlative Clement Sector setting.

In Clement Sector setting, the physics of Zimm Drive (quantum jump) limit starship sizes due to the increasing chance of field bubble failure. It is truly a small ship setting.

The Moltke class cruiser has a projected construction number of six, with only the HFSS Moltke (class lead) and the HFSS Kitchener in service with the Hub Federation's Space Navy.

Nice design. Just some questions:

What TL is it supposed to be?

Why it has 58 hull points instead of the 50 supposed to have being a 2500 dton ship?

Does it not carry spare ammo (missiles, torpedoes and barrels for sandcasters)?

1. TL11/12
2. Reinforced structure adds more points to the total, as per MgT:HG
3. Each Missile and sandcaster turret and its associated magazine are distributed within the ships structure. The tonnage for that distribution was factored but did not require to appear on a deck plan. You can see totals on the data sheet. Torpedo magazines are clearly marked on the deck plans (deck 3, forward)

1) OK

2) As per MgT LBB2 HG page 41, the tables shows ships up to 2000 dton and above 3000. I you asume it on the line of 2000, to add those 8 structure points would need 250 dton (5 % of volumen per 4 points). If you asume the 3000-10000 dton line, it would require 125 dton (5% volumen per 8 points). In either case I don't see it reflected on the data sheet, that's why I asked.

3) OK, I see it now, among other features. Sorry for not seeing it before asking.

Fair comment. I mimicked the data sheet as per the Clement Sector core settings book. and did not include data on the reinforced structure. However my design worksheet certainly includes the tonnage allocation based on the 3000-10,000dTonne line. :)

How are you getting the torpedo racks and sizes?

Add an extra computer?

Are you using the advanced TL size down and/or plus up rules?

Straight from MgT:HG.

There is a duplicate computer for backup and TL reductions were used for the torpedo racks.

I would pull the fusion bays, put in two new mesons, and two more torpedo racks, and delete the boat and put in more torp storage.

Given the damage rules, 24 torpedo salvos with a master gunner and good fire control computer are ship killers.

Does your universe have dampers? If not, I would really consider going to armor 15.

I would be tempted to buy radiation armor in the absence of a damper, even though it will double the ship cost.

A nice, well-thought out design, and good-looking too. Looks good for adventure play, though if you want to use it in a tournament you might want to clean up the math errors.

Zimm drive is the Clement Sector setting (Gypsy Knight Games) jump drive. Max parsec range is 2. Max dT for generation of a Zimm drive bubble is 5000dT. Clement Sector setting is most definitely a small ship setting.

Thank you that was confusing me,

I love the shape of the ship, not so happy with the name are we talking Moltke the elder or Moltke the younger?

Personally I would prefer a faster ship, so Clement sector is not for me.

Thank you

kind regards

David

The ship is named after Moltke the elder, just as the WW1 battlecruiser class was named.

Clement Sector is a TL12, small ship setting with a jump limit of 2. I assume you are referring in to that and not the 4G acceleration the ship has?

Hi,

yes the J2 limit at the sector level you are looking at best part of 2 years to cross the sector and back, even J3 is a bit slow for a sector scale campaign,

David

Not a problem. Clement Sector's conduit collapse isolates the human colonies 10K light years plus from Earth. The explored and the smaller colonised portion of the sector is all they have :)

The average trader in 3I only has J1-J2, so it has that similarity.

I love the setting :)

As long as you are jumping 1 week anyway, why not do a modular design where you jump in 2,500 ton chunks and assemble a battleship?

Failing that, combine a fleet into two of the three Mongoose fleet legs, anti-fighter ships and missile swarms.

However, an arms race will happen, with system monitors to defend, at cruiser size, so at least cruisers will have to be assembled in the Ort cloud.
