Mongoose Traveller Open Playtest

Gypsy:

You don't need to post the commentary. I'll notify with a link in this forum when the next edition is posted, and you can (and should) post commentary on the playtest via email in either word or RTF formats.

So there is no need to hang out on the boards there, but by the same token, this isn't the place for feedback, as it definitely WON'T be read by those who need it.

Several strong personalities who are "never wrong, regardless of evidence" manifested VERY quickly, and showed themselves to be pervasive and persistent. Discussion in such an environment can quickly become impossible.

So yeah, I'll be contributing via eMail.

I've seen that happen before.

*cough*TML*cough*

Seriously, I hope I wasn't one of those you perceived that way. But Aramis is right; e-mailing your comments to them is the best way to make sure you get heard above the din.

I'm just hoping they'll get around to answering a couple of questions soon, so I can definitively settle some arguments in my own group.

I never had anything to do with TML but unfortunately saw the same behavior in HIWG and on the SJG JTAS boards. I used to try and provide some counterpoint but I'm getting too old to worry about who "wins" and who "loses".

Hmmm. I don;t think its as bad as all that, BUT yes, I've recognised at least one deafening expert there, and endured one good old fashon teapot tempest .

Bound to happen though. new forum, and those who had the most to say and the worst way of saying it flock there, due to a whole new audience/set of suckers. and hot buttons.

The argument about the book cover art was particularly wretched....and familiar, had to make an int10+ save to avoid chiming in.

That was the one. Given that it arose from a "what are they releasing first" thread and was thus completely out of left field, it showed a couple people in pretty bad lights. The easily identifiable Mongoose staffers were not among the ugly in this case, thankfully. I *had* something I would have liked to contribute to the early stages of that thread, but four pages of tantrum later I knew it would never be seen.

Playtest questions or form

Oh my lord I have nothing nice to say about the forum over at Mongoose about the Traveller playtest. Well one nice thing, the Mongoose people are great.

So for those that have actually played the rules as written what kind of feedback have you sent in by e-mail? Does anyone have a playtest form kicking around?

I think my message over at Mongoose was buried in some argument about what should be called what.

Thank you.

Ara

No form. Just type them up in word or as an rtf document, and submit it via email as an attachment (windows friendly is recommended, if you're on mac or 'n*x)

The Email addy is on the first page of the playtest document.

Well, they've certainly updated the tech.

Will there be a hue-and-cry? I don't doubt it.

That said, it should be pretty easy to eliminate waferjacks and smart weapons from your campaign without difficulty if that's what you want.

Yeah - we may make it clear that certain sections are not OTU-friendly, or cut some technology and stick it in a technology guide if there's a huge backlash.

My personal take is that the Imperium's a very, very big place, and some worlds should have technology of that sort, but it's not my call in the end.

I really don't see as the new tech as listed would be that bad for Traveller. Doesn't hurt to add some modern concepts.

I figure the old timers will either use it or they won't. Having more bits to play with can't hurt. How many of us actually play any version of Traveller 'straight out of the box.'

One place I can see it being noticeable is when a munchkin strays from the herd. The new gear gives them more 'objectives' to acquire.

My objective is the plasma gun combat drone 'cause it's big and shiny. "Illegal on many worlds" also adds to the coolness.

Ya know what also adds to the coolness?

When somebody hacks your drone, and it turns on you.

Illegal for a reason, maybe?

;)

Yep, we'll have to see what happens if Virus shows up. All the guys insisting they need this stuff will have real problems. "My uber leet attack arm is trying to kill me." My implant computer is telling me to kill myself.

As for the plasma gun drone, the illegal version is the autonomous model that shoots for itself. Think Clippy with first strike capability. "It looks like you're trying to enter the premises. BLAM. Would you like me to help with that? BLAM."
