Morrow Project

Not to get to far off subject but ...

Ark II was a Krofft Bros. (Land of the Lost, HR Puffenstuff, etc.) version of Damnation Alley that aired in 1976. Only about a dozen episodes, all exploring a post-apocolyptic western U.S. There was a cast of three, a mutant chimp, and a nuke powered streamlined winnebago. When I was ten, it was cool! Guaranteed it had some influence on MP.
 
I loved the Atchisson automatic shotgun in Morrow Project, long before Twilight 2000's CAWS.

The HK CAWS was cancelled but Dawoo of Korea still makes the Achisson under licence.


The Morrow Project had a very complicated damage system that didn't truly add realism. OK, you got to tell the difference between a lung and liver hit, but what if the bullet riccochets off the scapula and perforates a kidney? Simpler just to roll light/serious/critical. The explosive rues rocked. I ran into the designer about 10 years ago at Origens and he was the only game designer who understood ballistics. I think he was with R. Talosorian then.

Aftermath introduced the Task System that Ate Chicago. In outline similar to Bushido and Flashing Blades, but with a level of detail and flexibility that was frightening. And I ran a C&S mage. But I agree the system was logical and easy once you learned the principles. It didn't have the web of exceptions and special cases that polutes D20.

If only the other PCs didn't delight in atrocity...
 
Morrow was one of the few games that I only played and not GM'ed.

In one the team awoke and after getting out of our sealed units found that we were still in the cargo hold of the ship that was taking us to our bolthole. We were at the bottom of one of the Great Lakes! Getting out alive, much less with some equipment and before our air ran out was a challenge that took a few game sessions. We got to the surface to find that we has woken up early and the war was still going on. In this GM's world the Soviets invaded through Alaska into Canada. Don't remember the end of the game but it was fun running around trying to keep the pockets of civilization from crumbling while also trying to contact Prime Base.

The vehicle in Ark II was real similar to the Science 1 in Morrow( minus the chimp of course).

The leader, Jonah, used a Jetpack and a hand-held laser tool.

Adam was the Chimp.

Actually it's quite easy to run an Alantis Project game.Their wake-up time was listed in Prime Base as 150 yrs.(I've alawys played it that they were tied into the Prime Base computer for wake-up.)The teams would be set up just like a Morrow team,just diffrent equipment(equipment of state based in;i.e.: UK teams using Land Rovers & other UK military vechicles,Fn-Fal's & IW's as main longarm & whatever the std. UK sidearm. ).The missions are the same. Just read the TM 1-1 & it lists project goals.
 
I wonder what Dave Nilsen would make out of this thread. He always stated that TNE was not post appocalyptic. It seems like on his thread he wanted to emphasis the nobility and rebirth.

Having never heard of the Morrow Project before this thread...doesn't it seem a tad 1960s SF whereby American ingenuity combined with psychic/alien powers allow a billionare to save the day? Frankly, when I picked up T2000, I saw the possibility of the Great Game or GDW's wargame WW3 but with a whole host of role playing options. Is this a naive view based only what has been on offer or did others see that the game could be a game to liberate us from tyranny.

Whether you call them TEDs or Warlords, it matters little humanity fell upon its classic hubris and blew everything up "real good" and now is the time to find the resources of hope to rebuild the whole thing but in a different way.
