[New Book] Scoundrel!

So, MongMatt indicated that a book called “Scoundrels” is coming out… so what is in it? Is it an expansion of all three Rogue branches? I was kind of hoping that Pirates would get a sourcebook all their own with some organizations, running a campaign etc.

Let's discuss bad things people do...

I hope so!

Hopefully there will also be stuff for other paths that could go on the grey side of things - Drifters could be likely, and maybe some thoughts on the type of Free Trader who might sometimes neglect to mention certain items of cargo on the manifest.

Whatever it is, it looks like an entry into the list of "all new" material as opposed to updates.

Scoundrel will not cover pirates - they will indeed be getting their own book (which will contain far more than just pirate characters - fancy running your own pirate/raiders band?).

Excellent! Pirates are too huge and intrinsic to not receive their own book. Very good news. So since you're commenting on Scoundrel... what can we know about it? I found no press releases or hints over on the Mongoose page. Would love to know what's being envisioned.

Maybe we'll see the likes of:

Barfly
Mooch
Unemployed Brother-in-Law
Used Spacecraft Salesman

and the dreaded...

Door to Door Vacuum Cleaner Salesman

Rofl, nerf herder nearly did me in. Dirt Merchants, Carpet Baggers and the dreaded telemarketer slavers come to mind. There used to be a company near here named Custom Captive Corporation. It was recycled as a kidnap for hire firm in CyberPunk. "So you say you want a 5' 2" Redhead, near as possible to 26B-20-28, no older than 19? I think we can supply such an item, let us discuss terms and costs...."

I myself am looking forward to the "Scruffy Looking Nerf Herder" career.

Since the nerf herders lead a blameless pastoral life-style, even if they do come in from the fields in less than spotless condition, I think they're candidates for some book other than Scoundrels. :D

Lawyers/Barristers, commissioned inside sales, I.T. consultants, venture capitalists, and web 2.0 start-ups are all good fits for the book, however.

I, for one, am very much looking forward to this sourcebook. It's a topic that has been sadly neglected in every other version and Mongoose has a chance to add something of real value to Our Olde Game.

The Keith Bros. did tackle the subject in their (in)famous Lost Supplements, but I've had them for some time now and have grown less satisfied in how they handled the topic.

Regards,
Bill

Do you think Pirate will include Software Pirate or will they have a seperate book for computer-related paracriminal careers? Maybe Software Pirate should go in with Scoundrel along with Illegal Movie and Music Downloader.

Other Scoundrel Careers:

MMO Griefer
Email Spammer
Deadbeat Roommate
Freeway Panhandler

I'm getting a kind of squishy feeling that there's too much subdivision going on with the careers. Do we really want a book for every sub-path of every career presented in the core book? I don't. D&D 3.5 did that to me and I'm not spending that much on rule books again. I just can't use that many books in a game no matter how many years I play.

I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have just ponied up the $35 and purchased all of the CT books. At least I wouldn't have to worry about some new book coming out and forcing me into some kind of weird retro-active continuity exercise.

Umm, that is not what we are doing - Scoundrel does not cover sub-careers, but two full careers (Rogues and Drifters). Furthermore, it replaces nothing from the main rulebook, and characters created with a career book in hand will be no better than those created from rulebook alone.

Use what you want, discard the rest - the recipe of good roleplaying!

The MMO Griefer idea was running around in my head while I was out doing yard work today. It's hard to keep the mind from rambling when cutting up fallen trees and such.

Things like--what's the Griefer's reason for travelling? What value would the background add to a character in the game, what would they bring to a group? What skills would they have? Life events? And so on.

An obvious reason for Travelling would be that they're being stalked IRL by the members of a large number of guilds, clans, and other multiplayer assemblages of people whose line they've crossed. Gave up MMOs and took up travelling for their health, as it were.

As to skills, one could presume that the character developed some social engineering and computer skills. While this isn't necessary for griefing, you could presume that those who never develop these skills never get the chance to become travellers.

A downside might be something along these lines; if they ever access a networked computer system, for any purpose or in any way, they have something like a 1% chance per year as a griefer of being noticed on the network by someone who is actively seeking to settle a score with them.

What else belongs in the griefer background?
