New Character Class - something similar to the French Foreign Legion

Folks:
So I have been thinking about designing a new character class that would model the French Foreign Legion; however, change the name and call it something along the lines of “Imperial Galactic Legion”. Yet, I am having some difficulty deciding on a new skill table, and what should be included.

I feel a good representation would be to blend Marines and Army characters together providing a model for a light rapidly deployed force that are somewhat commandos. In addition, paratroopers or their equivalent would resemble Mobile Infantry from Robert Heinlein’s, Starship Trooper (the book, not the movie).

Opened to suggestions or ideas…hope we can build this as a community topic and have a number of people jump in and provide ideas.

Thanks
JJ

I have something similar in my campaign, called "Interstellar Brigades", though they are really just a collection of Army and Marines.

Perhaps you could clarify your purpose in creating a new career.

Usually folks have an idea of a career that has a group of skills that are not one of the current careers and that drives the creation of the new career.

In this case it seams the title of a career doesn't match an existing career and that's what is driving creating a new career? If that's the case, I'd say use an existing career and give the group a new name? The French Foreign Legion is a part of the french army. Maybe something from the mercenary book is better suited than the army career in the CRB?

Is the fact that many members are former foreign nationals the precipitant for this new career? Vargr, Darrian, Droyne, Aslan, Hivers and K’Kree. Oh my. The French Foreign Legion still had some french members and the officers came from their own army ranks. May have to muck with the commission roll and officer ranks somehow....

Is it the concept of a bunch of out of place misfits with prior military experience being given an opportunity or what was more likely the motivation, to put potential dissidents under a watchful eye and give them something useful to do because you fear what they would end up doing since they have no everyday skills for supporting themselves. For this, prior military career would be a requirement instead of a negative DM to changing careers.

Are you going for what the original French Foreign Legion was or the modern version?

I'm not sure If I'd call them an elite commando or special ops type unit. They had more skill than perhaps the average unit, but that is because they are usually experienced soldiers before they join. Within the foreign legion they had their own elite units like the Foreign Parachute Regiment.

Thank you for the suggestions and feed back. I do not own a copy of the Mercenary book you talk about; however, I will look into the resource. In addition, unlike most careers - I placed a positive bonus on previous careers if the previous career was military related.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I think you are looking at mercenaries, as they are as far as I am aware foriegners paid by the French Government, loike our Ghurka's. I would probably use the striker career.
