New to the Game and Seeking "Enlightenment"

Hello everyone. I'm planning to run a game of T20 soon and one of the things I've noticed is a major lack of Religious context or content. Not saying that the game has to have it, but one of the things at least one (if not 3) of my players will want to do is investigate ruins, artifacts, and "myths" about the Ancients. And before I go and completely remake the world with things like that, I wanted to make sure there isn't a sourcebook or anything like that out already that I could easily benefit from. What can ya tell me?

I'd suggest making stuff up. It will be much more interesting than the official word.

The most official (and in print) writings of the Ancients is Here.

The other one is Adventure 12: Secrets of the Ancients. There are some mentions in other books. The Zhodani/Vargr Book have some more discussion of the Ancients influences.

Cults> Interstellar distance would allow for many bizarre cults to form. Think how many there are on just earth and build from there. A local Messiah or Deliverer certainly would drive a plot for a few thousand years...

In my game we recently had a Divine Intervention by a Planet's God... or was it? Religion is good for Mysteries too...

You want old time religion? Try HP Lovecraft.
Psionic statues that drive men homicidal.
Abandoned colony sites that are not on the map.

Seriously, a very good suggestion.

There is plenty of room to make stuff up, as "The Ancients" period was 300,000 years prior to the Imperial period. Even at typical human TLs, even a fraction of that is enough to provide archeological mysteries. Things that may be attributed to "the Ancients" may be no such thing, while things which appear mundane may be millenia old pieces of the next clue.

Note that two groups, one of whom is comprised mostly of Vargr and the other being the Geonee in the rimward center of the Imperium, are firmly convinced of the nature of the Ancients, and are likely to engage in counter-archeology if they are local to your game and catch hints of the PCs. Add to these the small horde of rich collectors who will pay well to get first pick of your findings (against Imperial Law, by the way: The Imperium has first shot at all Ancient artifacts) up to and including paying you *not* to publish, and you could cheerfully keep PCs engaged for months at a time over *one find*.

There are hints in canon about races that predate the "Ancients" by a long way.

There's also possibility of the ruins and remains of other races and cultures that fill the gap between the "Ancient" period and the 3rd Imperium.

Then there are the lost wonders of the Second Imperium...

Okay, well it seems like even if I did want to spend more money here at Christmas/Yule, I'd be better off not. And "Make It Up" FTW! That's cool thanks guys/girls.

I had thought of several of the ideas mentioned myself, but again wanted to see what the concensus was for such things. Now I know, and I will take your suggestions, my ideas, and my evil, twisted mind and make the research part of the game more horrific than the battle of Malvern Hill. MWUAHAHAHAHA
