New to Traveller

SOC-4
Howdy all.

I'm a bit new to this site, fact I just joined. A few people on the WOTC forum told me to check out Traveller on the net and see what I could find. I must say that I am very impressed, even though I don't know much about this game I'm already wanting to learn a whole lot more...

Anyone care to help educate me?

First and foremost welcome.

I guess the first thing that you ought to know Traveller is a game with a history and its history is bound up with different editions. {I will let someone else summerize their differences but if you need a quick answer check out www.downport.com}

Classic Traveller (CT)
MegaTraveller (MT)
Traveller: New Era (TNE)
Traveller 4 (T4)
GURPS Traveller (GT)
Traveller D20 (T20)
Traveller 5 (T5)

Each of these have their own particular strengths and weaknesses. We praise, gripe, and argue all the time about the merits on this list and the TML (listserv). What matters is not where we disagree but how we can all agree that Traveller is the best SFRPG on the market.

The strength of the Traveller name is that it offers 25 year development history that has fed a rich tapestry that one can game in.
So if you are looking for a game with a rich background, you have found it.

Traveller is also about rules and in its different incarnations has come up some of the most comprehensive rules that would let you build everything from a slug thrower to a starship.

Terrific! Much thanks, kafka47!

Alright so will I have no worries about when I obtain the Traveller D20 books that I won't miss out on alot of this great background info that you tell me of (I've been shocked before, but I am assuming not)?

Also, what is the ETA on Traveller D20, if you know?

Well, Hunter, the resident T20 expert who answers many questions except those directed at getting at the Secrets behind T20 could answer specific questions. [As I too want to know the release date!!!]

Should you want background your best bet would be to try to pick up produced by Far Future Enterprises - Classic Traveller Reprints: Supplements. Once you get a general gest of the background. (I could send you a couple page summary if you don't already have something called The Traveller Book) - if T20 does not have alot of background, again something directed to Herr Hunter. If you can ignore the rules, Gurps Traveller mainbook does answer alot of questions quickly.

A good portion of the last half of the T20 core book will have details and info on the Imperium and running a Traveller campaign. It should provide just about everything you need to get started if you are new to Traveller and the Imperium campaign setting.

We are still pressing hard for a late November release. The playtest is wrapping up and we are working on some of the artwork and layout now.

Hunter,

Will have information about running non-Imperium Campaigns such as Swycaffer's Concordant or a more free wielding version of CT? Or what about what is increasing referred to different milieus that is to say different time periods of Imperial and non-Imperial History.

...Alas...if I only had time to be a playtester...as everything that you have put on the public view looks great!!

Roughly the first half of the book is the rules system, and we have tried to keep the Imperial campaign as minimal as possible in this section.

As far as running 'non-Imperium' campaigns, I'm not sure how we could do that without detailing out a secondary setting. Martin has written some guidelines on running a Traveller campaign that does not deal specifically (well not completely) with the Imperium setting.

On other milieu, we may do something with supplements for that (the planned TNE book is a good example)
